Moffat County: Nature, Rivers and History
Accommodation in Moffat County
Around 295 bird species occur in Moffat County. Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge covers 12,150 acres and was established to protect migratory birds as well as endangered and threatened species. Nature-based recreation is also part of its purpose. Conservation and recreation are therefore explicitly side by side here.
Protected Areas and Hiking Trails
A footpath in Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge is 1 mile long. It starts at the administration parking lot, follows Beaver Creek and loops around the remains of the McKnight homestead. The trail combines a stretch along the creek with a historic route. Another option for comparing trails is Harpers Corner Road: it leads to canyon overlooks and a 2-mile round-trip scenic hike. The Harpers Corner Trail runs along the upper canyon rim and offers impressive views. The two hikes differ in both length and route: a one-mile loop compared with a two-mile out-and-back hike.
A National Park Service description updated on October 5, 2024, lists Harpers Corner Road, its overlooks and the scenic hike. It identifies Gates of Lodore as the northernmost entrance to Dinosaur National Monument and Highway 318 as the access route. This information can help you plan for the canyon views described there and navigate the monument.
Rivers: Experiences and Regulations
The Yampa River is one of the last free-flowing rivers in America. The Yampa and Green Rivers offer everything from calm river trips to Class V whitewater. This range provides different ways to focus a trip on the water. When planning, it also matters which regulations apply to each section.
Only non-motorized boats and watercraft are allowed on the Green River within Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge. Boat access includes gravel boat ramps at the Swinging Bridge and Crook campgrounds. Since campground conditions can change, check the current information about the ramps before planning. Fishing is allowed year-round on the Green River and Beaver Creek; check the applicable regulations before your trip.
History, Museums and Woodcraft
The Wyman Museum includes a hay barn, a working blacksmith shop, the Pagoda Store and a one-room schoolhouse. The Jarvie homestead was first settled in 1880 and historically reconstructed near Browns Park. The site includes the original earth house, a blacksmith shop, a store, a cemetery and a museum. The two sites offer different points of interest: one brings together several types of historic buildings, while the homestead centers on its own settlement history and the features of the reconstructed site.
At Whittle the Wood, chainsaw artists carve tree stumps into unique works of art during a three-day event. This recurring tradition has grown annually for more than two decades. The format may change; if you are planning your stay around it, check the latest event information.
Choose the Right Type of Trip
In addition to a hotel stay, you can consider camping as a trip in its own right. Moffat County has numerous camping options, from basic sites to those with additional facilities. Deciding which nature, river or cultural themes you want to shape your trip can help tailor your stay to your interests.
