Discover Golden: history, museums and trails
Accommodation in Golden
Golden combines historic sites with opportunities to visit museums and spend time outdoors. To plan your trip, first consider whether city history, exhibits or hiking trails should shape your stay. The places and activities below offer concrete starting points—from a reconstructed farmstead to trails along Clear Creek.
Historic buildings and city history
Golden History Park is located along Clear Creek in Downtown Golden. It recreates the appearance and atmosphere of a late-19th-century mountain farm: the grounds include gardens, a working blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse and a chicken coop. The park is also home to many original buildings from Pearce Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon. Another building with its own history is the Guy Hill schoolhouse. It dates to 1876 and was moved to Golden in 1976. You can plan your visit around specific buildings and different parts of the farmstead.
The Golden History Museum focuses on something different. Its dynamic exhibits showcase the city’s collection of 16,000 historic objects; families with young children can visit an interactive gallery. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and admission is free. Check the opening hours again before you go.
The historic districts also offer plenty to explore on foot: Golden has eight districts that visitors can explore. The self-guided Golden History Walking Tour passes through the historic districts and shares their history. The historic 12th Street Neighborhood has more than 50 historic buildings. It also includes the place where Colorado’s legislators met when Golden was the capital of the territory. The tour and the neighborhood offer two ways to explore the city’s history: a self-guided route through several districts or a visit focused on a specific historic neighborhood.
Trails, views and outdoor activities
Lava flows formed North Table Mountain about 60 million years ago. North Table Mountain Park offers panoramic views, more than 15 miles of trails and opportunities for climbing. These options suit different interests: you can focus on the landscape views, go hiking or try climbing.
The paved stretch of the Clear Creek Trail in Clear Creek Canyon Park runs four miles along Clear Creek and is ten feet wide. Clear Creek Canyon Park also offers opportunities for climbing, kayaking and rafting. In Golden’s trail network, the Clear Creek Trail runs along 10th Street from Ford Street to the 6th Avenue Bridge; this section is open from sunrise to sunset.
