Trails, Parks, and Big Dry Creek
Thornton has more than 140 miles of trails and more than 2,500 acres of parkland. The trail mileage describes the citywide network, while the acreage figure covers the city’s parks. Together, these figures offer a guide for travelers who want to include open spaces and exercise in their plans. Public parks are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Since operating hours may change, check the hours before your visit.
The Big Dry Creek corridor offers opportunities for passive recreation, wildlife habitat, and open space. Big Dry Creek and its floodplain are also an important natural resource for east-west wildlife movement and regional trail connectivity. More than 300 acres of open land have been preserved along the corridor in Thornton. Nature here therefore encompasses both recreational spaces and wildlife habitat and movement corridors.
Gravel Lakes has its own seasonal hours: it is open from sunrise to sunset from March 15 through October 31. This is a different schedule from the daily opening hours of the public parks. Check current hours before your visit, especially if you are planning around the season or time of day.
Skate Parks and Exercise
Thornton’s city parks include three skate parks. Carpenter Park has a skate park and trails. Carpenter Recreation Center also offers an indoor running and walking track with a soft synthetic surface. Twelve laps equal one mile, putting the stated number of laps into a concrete distance. The park, trails, and track offer different ways to incorporate exercise into your travel plans.
Golf is also part of the city’s leisure offerings: Thornton has a public golf course covering 144 acres and with a par of 72. The facility includes a driving range, a putting green, and a restaurant. If you want to include this activity, you can make golf a focus of your stay in Thornton alongside trails, parks, and culture.
Culture and Events
The Thornton Arts & Culture Center at 9209 Dorothy Boulevard opened in 2011 as a municipal center for the performing and visual arts. The center includes a gallery, a theater space, a city archive, and offices. The public can visit the OZ Gallery exhibitions Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every second Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hours may change; check them before planning a visit.
Arts Thornton presents year-round educational programs through the Thornton Arts Academy, seasonal community events, the ArtsThornton music series, quarterly OZ Gallery exhibitions, and public art. The offerings combine regular programs with seasonal events. Depending on when you travel, you can make culture a main focus or an addition to outdoor activities.
The Thornton Harvest Fest program includes a skate competition at Thomas J. Slocum Memorial Skate Park, with categories for scooters, bicycles, and skateboards. The festival also features more than 100 artisans, home-based businesses, and other vendors. Event details may change from year to year; check the information if the festival is important to your travel plans.
