Somis offers travelers several distinct points of interest: local history, animals, and a Farm Market with food and gift items. The Somis Thursday Clubhouse and the Fulkerson Hardware Store represent different historical developments. Several animal species live at the Somis Animal Center; the center is situated among citrus trees and lawns and has picnic tables. The Somis Farm Market complements the local history and animal attractions with its own selection of products. As you plan your trip, you can first consider whether historic sites, animals, or market products are of particular interest to you.

Local History: Clubhouse and Hardware Store

The history of the Somis Thursday Clubhouse begins with two closely spaced but distinct dates. The Somis Thursday Club was founded as a social group in 1894; in 1895, the clubhouse was built as a one-room schoolhouse. The first date refers to the founding of the club, while the second refers to the construction of the building and its original use.

In 1924, the building was sold to the Somis Thursday Club for $250 after the new Somis School had been built. The clubhouse is a preserved landmark of Ventura County.

Another historical point of reference is the Fulkerson Hardware Store. It was originally established in 1912; its building was constructed in 1925. The establishment and construction were 13 years apart and mark different steps, not a single founding date for both the business and the building. Alongside the club’s history, this site offers a clear comparison between the origin of a business and the later construction of its building.

For a chronological comparison, it is important to note that not all the years refer to construction dates: 1894 and 1912 mark the founding of the club and the business, respectively; 1895 and 1925 mark the construction of the buildings; and 1924 marks the sale of the clubhouse. This makes it possible to distinguish the club’s history, the business’s history, and the construction history rather than reducing them to a single date.

Animals and Surroundings

The Somis Animal Center is home to sheep, alpacas, chickens, and numerous pygmy goats. The animal population includes several species, with pygmy goats particularly numerous. The surroundings are also part of the site’s character: the center is situated among citrus trees and lawns, and the grounds include picnic tables. If you are especially interested in animals, this area offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the animals and outdoor setting are both central.

Somis Farm Market Selection

The Somis Farm Market complements the local history and animal attractions with a focus on products. Its selection includes pickled vegetables, honey, nuts, juices, dried beans, and fresh farm eggs. The market also carries fresh-cut flowers, gifts, and gift baskets. The selection therefore includes food as well as flowers and gift items. If you have particular products in mind, check the current selection in advance, as it may change.
