In Ventura County, boat trips to Channel Islands National Park, coastal landscapes and museums can offer different focuses for your trip. Agriculture and aviation are also among the topics to explore here. When planning, it helps to consider whether you’d mainly like to spend time outdoors or are interested in history, collections and regional culture.

Channel Islands and Coast

Public boats to Channel Islands National Park operate year-round from Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Harbor. Check the schedules before your trip. If you’d like to learn about the islands without taking a boat, you can visit the national park’s mainland visitor center at Ventura Harbor.

Point Mugu State Park lies at the westernmost end of the Santa Monica Mountains and includes five miles of ocean coastline. Rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and dunes define the coast; inland, the landscape includes rugged hills, plateaus, two large river canyons, grasslands and valleys. More than 70 miles of trails offer different ways to explore the park on foot. Swimming, body surfing and surf fishing are possible at the beach.

McGrath State Beach offers a different coastal experience: the beach stretches for two miles and offers opportunities for surfing and fishing. The area is one of California’s particularly good spots for birdwatching. Its landscape includes the lush riparian areas of the Santa Clara River and coastal dunes. There are also campsites near the beach; check their current status before your trip.

The Ojai Valley Trail offers another distinct route: the nine-mile trail runs parallel to Highway 33, from Foster Park on the edge of western Ventura to Fox Street in Ojai. Its length and named endpoints make it easier to factor the trail into your own travel plans.

Museums, History and Aviation

The Museum of Ventura County is a museum of art, history and culture, as well as the largest historical archive in Ventura County. The Ojai Valley Museum focuses on the art, history and culture of the Ojai Valley: the museum collects and displays artworks, artifacts, photographs and paper documents related to the area. Both institutions offer different ways to explore regional history—through an archive and museum, or through collections and exhibitions.

The Aviation Museum of Santa Paula at Santa Paula Airport is a special destination for aviation enthusiasts. It opens its “Chain of Hangars” to visitors on the first Sunday of every month. Visitors can see historic aircraft, memorabilia, vehicles and antiques in the privately operated hangars. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is a historical research institution of the U.S. federal government and a public museum. It sits on a hill with expansive views of the Southland; visitors can stroll through the grounds. At the museum, it’s also possible to board a real Air Force One aircraft that carried seven U.S. presidents.

In Santa Paula, the Agriculture Museum brings together a historic site and agricultural topics. It is housed in the historic Mill building, built in 1888 as an agricultural warehouse. Hands-on educational tours with learning stations cover plant growth, seasonal produce, past and present farming methods, and water issues. The program ranges from the basics of growing plants to changes in agriculture.

Events and Choosing a Hotel

Ventura County Farm Day is an annual public agricultural event that began in 2012 and opens farm gates to visitors. The program includes free tours and activities at more than 15 locations; participating farms vary by edition. Check the date of the next event before your trip. At the fourth edition of Taste of Santa Paula, held in 2025, local restaurants and wineries came together to offer handcrafted specialties and selected beverages. Check the dates and participating businesses again for future editions.

When looking for a hotel in Ventura, you can start by deciding what you’d like to focus on during your stay: the coast and boat trips, museum visits, or topics such as agriculture and aviation. For time-specific events and boat trips, include the exact dates and schedules in your travel plans.
