Los Alamos brings together the history of Bell Street with wine, food, and special event formats. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in town, you can plan around your interests: architecture and local history, tastings and local cuisine, or an event that puts a celebration center stage. The following highlights show exactly what these options involve.

Bell Street and Local History

Los Alamos was founded in 1876 as a stagecoach stop. Bell Street is the main street and still features Wild West-style façades. Here, a distinct local history meets a striking streetscape.

Commerce and transportation are also part of the town’s historical context: an assessment documented in 2024 found the Los Alamos Commercial District eligible for protection under the National Register of Historic Places and the California Register of Historical Resources.

A more specific architectural example is the California Garage at 346 Bell Street. It was individually found eligible for protection at the local level under both registers. The one-story commercial building is considered an excellent example of a commercial garage with Streamline Moderne details; its period of significance was set at 1929.

Historic use and present-day function come to the fore in different ways at two other places: The Depot Bar is located in a freight depot of the Pacific Coast Railway. The Los Alamos Depot Mall, by contrast, combines a pub with an antique shop.

Wine, Cuisine, and Craftsmanship

Pico offers wine tastings in the garden or historic general store, Wednesday through Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. Since this is a business schedule, it’s best to check the hours before your visit. Pico also prepares upscale home-style cooking with local ingredients. The ingredients come from farmers committed to organic, regenerative, and animal-welfare-friendly practices.

On Bell Street, visitors can taste Pinot Noir and Grenache from Casa Dumetz. Bodega Los Alamos is an open-air wine garden and gathering place on historic Bell Street. Its selection includes natural wines, craft beers, and local goods.

The baked goods also offer a close look at how they’re made. At Bob’s Well Bread at 550 Bell Street, baked goods are made by hand with natural starters and no added preservatives. Full of Life makes sourdough flatbreads that rise slowly for 36 hours and are baked in a 20-ton stone oven.

Events and Time Outdoors

The Los Alamos Third Saturday Stroll takes place every month and includes themed special events. Los Alamos Old Days celebrates the town’s cowboy heritage with a parade, BBQ, and live music. If you’d like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates before arranging your stay around it.

Ferrini Park is a good spot for a picnic and has volleyball courts. Poplar trees also line the creek in Los Alamos.
