Santa Ynez: Discover Wine, Culture and History
Accommodation in Santa Ynez
Santa Ynez combines wine tastings with museums, historical collections and Chumash culture. When looking for a hotel in Santa Ynez, it helps to first decide what you want from your stay: Would you like to explore historical exhibits and programs, sample a range of wine tastings, or plan your trip around an event date? The offerings vary in both subject matter and format.
Culture and History
The Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum features exhibits and hosts public programs that interpret past events and the diverse communities of California’s Central Coast. The museum also offers lectures, garden and house tours, and events celebrating the valley’s agricultural strengths. History and agriculture are therefore two distinct themes in its program.
Another collection is on display at the Parks-Janeway Carriage House: It features horse-drawn vehicles and is the largest collection of its kind west of the Mississippi. Those interested in history can thus choose between a broader historical interpretation and a specific collection theme.
The Santa Ynez Chumash Museum and Cultural Center includes a 3.5-acre cultural park with outdoor exhibits and more than 11,000 California native plants used by the Chumash. The Chumash Intertribal Powwow takes place annually in October as a two-day event in Santa Ynez; more than 300 Indigenous dancers and singers take part. If you are traveling specifically for the event, plan your stay around the dates it takes place.
Wine Tastings and Special Formats
Tasting venues differ in their settings and the formats they offer. Carr Winery operates a tasting room in a 3,800-square-foot, climate-controlled wine warehouse in the heart of Old Town Santa Ynez. CrossHatch Wines has a tasting room in the Bohlinger Building in Santa Ynez. There, guests can order wine by the glass and full tasting flights.
At Gainey Vineyard, the tasting experience includes a curated flight of estate wines from the Limited Selection. Weather permitting, tastings take place on scenic outdoor terraces surrounded by gently rolling vineyards. Visitors can enjoy wine by the glass or bottle on the Vineyard View Lawn. This gives guests two distinct options: a curated flight and wine by the glass or bottle.
Roblar Winery & Vineyards offers a private tour of its winery and vineyards. It also serves curated food pairings designed by its executive chef and prepared with ingredients harvested daily on the estate. Roblar also offers brunch tastings on Sundays. When planning, it makes a difference whether you want to focus on a tour, a food-paired tasting, or the Sunday format.
At Sunstone Winery, the tasting room sits above the Santa Ynez River and is surrounded by lavender-scented courtyards and picnic areas. Inspired by Provence, the Sunstone Villa overlooks the gently rolling Santa Ynez Mountain Range and the estate’s vineyards. Here, too, the features described are distinct: the winery is characterized by its location and the tasting room’s surroundings, while the villa is distinguished by its design and views.
The Santa Ynez Valley as a Wider Setting
Beyond the town’s attractions, the Santa Ynez Valley is one of the most diverse wine-growing regions in Santa Barbara County. Country roads connect wineries and communities, making the area suitable for bike rides ranging from short family outings to 50-mile routes and multi-day tours through wine country. For planning a bike trip, the distance is a useful point of comparison: a short ride and a multi-day tour are very different undertakings, even though both take you through wine country.
