Arroyo Grande offers a variety of interests to explore: historic buildings and collections sit alongside hiking trails, a creekside park, and events with a history of their own. When planning a stay, the differences between these places are especially interesting: some offer insight into architectural history and earlier ways of life, while others lead to nature or a specific event.

Culture and History in Different Places

The Swinging Bridge was built by the Short family in early 1875. You can cross it on foot, by bicycle, or running. The Santa Manuela Schoolhouse, built in 1901, has been restored to its original condition with books, maps, chalkboards, and photographs. It is an interactive museum to explore. The bridge and schoolhouse offer different points of interest: one is a historic structure, the other a restored schoolhouse with its original furnishings.

The Barn Museum’s collection includes agricultural, ranching, and commercial artifacts. Also on display are historic carriages and vehicles, including a 1923 LaFrance fire engine. The small Hoosegow is a one-room jail believed to have been built around 1910. Hoosegow Park surrounds the preserved jail and is maintained by the City of Arroyo Grande. The small park offers elevated views of the Village below.

Built in 1889, the Paulding History House is a designated California Historic Resource. It was the home of Edward Paulding, Arroyo Grande’s first doctor. Visits are available by appointment; arrange your visit in advance. The Heritage House offers a different focus: the cultural museum is housed in a Victorian cottage. Its exhibits show domestic life and clothing from the past hundred years.

Hiking Trails and Time by the Creek

Hiking trails run along Arroyo Grande Creek, and the James Way Oak Habitat and Wildlife Preserve also has hiking trails. At Centennial Park, you can picnic by the creek. So, for time outdoors, you can choose between trails and a specific spot to take a break by the water.

Saturday Market and Event Dates

A farmers' market is held at Centennial Park most Saturdays from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m. Live music is also often featured there on most Saturdays during this time. Market hours and the music program may change; check the details if you’re planning your visit around a Saturday.

The Arroyo Grande Summer Concert Series is a long-running, popular, free community event for all ages. Arroyo Grande’s Harvest Festival is a celebration that has been held since 1937. Dates for future events may vary. If a concert or the festival is key to your travel plans, check the dates before your trip.
