Fallbrook is accessible by car from Southern California and lies south of Temecula, off Interstate 15. Rolling hills, river courses, historic homes, and open spaces give the town a variety of focal points for a stay.

Orchard Landscapes and River Courses

Fallbrook’s landscape is shaped by rolling hills covered with avocado and citrus orchards. Two rivers help define the area’s geography: the Santa Margarita River runs through rugged terrain in the northern part of the Fallbrook planning area. The San Luis Rey River runs along the southern boundary, which Fallbrook shares with Bonsall.

The Avocado Festival takes place every spring and showcases Fallbrook’s agricultural heritage. Avocados are considered a signature product of the area. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates before making plans.

Historic Homes and Museums

Fallbrook’s Heritage Center comprises several museums: the Main Museum, The Ford Room, the Gem and Mineral Museum, and The Barn. The center also includes the historic Pittenger House. This carefully restored 1895 farmhouse is associated with William Pittenger, a Civil War hero and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Palomares House is one of the oldest surviving homes in Fallbrook and represents the region’s cultural and architectural history. Together with the Pittenger House, it is one of the historic sites that reveal Fallbrook’s past from different perspectives: the Pittenger House through its date and connection to William Pittenger, and the Palomares House through the region’s domestic, cultural, and architectural history.

Trails and Open Spaces

Two distinct trail experiences make choosing easy: Los Jilgueros Preserve offers loop trails through coastal sage scrub and the riparian corridor of Ostrich Farms Creek. Dinwiddie Preserve offers a short, mostly flat hike through tall oaks and along blooming wild roses.

Village View County Park has a paved, ADA-accessible loop around the multi-use field. The park also has an 18,000-square-foot off-leash dog park, divided into areas for small and large dogs. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are permitted at Horse Creek Ridge Open Space Preserve.

The Wildlife Sculpture Garden features numerous sculptures of native wildlife. Benches and picnic tables are also part of the grounds. This gives the site a different focus from trails through scrubland, riparian corridors, or oak groves.

Minerals and Visit Planning

The Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society offers guest lectures, workshops, lapidary classes, field trips, and gemstone and mineral exhibits. Visitors are welcome to take part in its activities. The society’s free museum and gift shop are open Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. Hours may change; check them before your visit.

You can choose what to focus on during your stay—landscape, history, trails, or minerals—based on these specific themes. If you’re planning around the Avocado Festival, the event dates matter; for a museum visit, check the listed hours and the option to make an appointment in advance.
