Greenfield brings together the history of Clark Colony, art in the library building, city programs and parks. If you are considering Greenfield as a travel destination, these themes offer different points of interest for your stay: local history sits alongside festivals and activities for different age groups.

Beginnings as Clark Colony

Greenfield began as Clark Colony in April 1905, when 4,000 acres of valley floor were subdivided. The settlers of Clark Colony built the largest irrigation and domestic water supply system in the Salinas Valley. The renaming is also part of the town’s history: after the United States Postal Service said there were too many places called Clark City in the state, Clark Colony was renamed Greenfield.

Library, Art and Memorial Hall

The Greenfield Library was established on January 8, 1914, and was the first library in Monterey County. Its current building is decorated with murals depicting Greenfield by local artist Cindy Davis. The Greenfield Library is also home to a wall quilt created by the Greenfield Quilters that shows the region’s history.

The Greenfield Memorial Hall was completed and opened in 1956. It includes a full-court basketball gym that also serves as an auditorium with a stage. Historically, the hall was used as a community activity center.

Festivals and City Programs

The Greenfield Harvest Festival dates back to the Broccoli Festival of the 1980s. It is a free, family-friendly annual festival featuring live music, car shows, a variety of vendors and children’s areas. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates before booking.

The Tinker Time Drop-In Program runs year-round in a flexible, free format and is aimed at youth and families. The ScienceMobile (Ciencia Ambulante) is a mobile, hands-on science museum with more than 30 rotating exhibits; it visits Greenfield schools every year.

The Greenfield Bike Garage offers free repairs for bicycles, skateboards and scooters. Greenfield also hosts a larger repair event, one of the seven major annual repair events in South Monterey County.

The Greenfield Wreath Making Workshop is open to all seniors, takes place on the fourth Wednesday of each month and requires no registration. As program details may change, check them before visiting.

Parks and Recreation

Greenfield has 19 parks and two indoor recreation facilities. Patriot Park is the city’s only community park and covers about 19.11 acres. The Greenfield Skate Park opened in 2002. Its features include quarter pipes, a halfpipe, extensions, banks and launchers.
