Carmel-By-The-Sea combines a white sand beach with a walkable town, nature attractions and cultural offerings. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to start with a simple distinction: Do you want to focus on the coast, are you interested in mission history and art, or would you like to plan a visit around a scheduled tour? The locations and times below offer concrete points of reference.

Beach and Trails

Carmel-By-The-Sea sits above a white sand beach and is easy to explore on foot. Carmel Beach is at the end of Ocean Avenue. Above the beach, the Scenic Pathway runs along the coast, with a compacted granite surface and nine stairway entrances to the beach. This makes it easy to think of the route above the shore and the beach itself as distinct coastal experiences.

Mission Trail Nature Preserve is a 34-acre park with three miles of hiking trails and a garden featuring native plants. Lester Rowntree Native Plant Garden is located within the preserve; its entrance is on Hatton Road.

Near Carmel-By-The-Sea, an access trail leads to the northern part of Carmel River State Beach. A cliffside trail runs parallel to the beach path to the north. This coastal area is a separate point of reference from Carmel Beach at the end of Ocean Avenue; keep the two beaches distinct when planning your trip.

Mission, History and Tours

Carmel Mission, also called Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Río Carmelo, was founded in 1771 and was the second of 21 missions founded in Alta California. It serves as an active Catholic parish and a museum, and is also considered a symbol of California’s cultural and religious history. The mission thus brings together a specific historical context and two present-day functions.

Tor House offers a different cultural focus: The house is a National Historic Landmark and is associated with poet Robinson Jeffers. Full interior and exterior tours are offered on Saturdays; the offering is limited on Fridays. Reservations are recommended. The day of the week is therefore an important planning consideration: Check current tour availability before your visit and reserve if possible.

Art and Wine Tastings

Carmel-By-The-Sea has more than 50 art galleries within an area of one square mile. This number may change. Carmel Art Walk offers a specific monthly event: On the second Saturday of each month from 4 to 7 p.m., you can meet artists and visit 14 galleries owned and operated by local artists. The total number of galleries indicates the breadth of the art scene; the Art Walk, by contrast, centers on a specific time slot and the chance to meet artists. Check the dates before your trip.

Wine tastings are another option to consider when planning your trip. Carmel-By-The-Sea has 16 wine-tasting rooms within walking distance of the hotels and inns there. The number is subject to change and should be checked again before your trip. Together with the galleries, the mission and the coastal trails, these offer a range of ways to shape your travel plans.
