El Portal: Railroad Heritage and Nature in Yosemite
Accommodation in El Portal
El Portal on the Merced River and at the Park’s Edge
El Portal lies just off Highway 140 on the southwestern border of Yosemite National Park. The town is on the Merced River and near the Arch Rock Entrance. The river and the proximity to the park entrance offer two distinct points of reference. Highway 140 winds in from the west through the Merced River Canyon and is designated a Scenic Highway by the State of California. Within Yosemite National Park, El Portal Road continues from Highway 140; the Arch Rock Entrance is a fee station on this road. As road conditions can vary seasonally, it is advisable to check the current conditions before driving.
Railroad and Local History
El Portal was the terminus of the Yosemite Valley Railroad until 1945. Caboose 15 of the Yosemite Valley Railroad and a locomotive from the Hetch Hetchy Railroad are on display in El Portal. The hand-operated railroad turntable is also located in El Portal. It is an exact reconstruction of the original and stands on the same foundation as the original turntable.
The old Bagby Station is also in El Portal; it was moved there before the town of Bagby was flooded. The El Portal Schoolhouse was built in 1930 on a hill above the Old El Portal Village Center and later used as a community chapel. In 1999, the State Historic Preservation Office deemed the building eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The reasons cited were its connection to the town’s development and the architecture of public buildings from the 1930s.
Archaeology and Geology
The El Portal Archeological District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Its dense concentrations of finds represent settlement over thousands of years and attest to continuous, far-reaching travel and trade. The district includes archaeological remains of the Johnny Wilson Ranch, a regionally rare historic-era homestead of Indigenous people. Savage’s Trading Post is designated California Historic Landmark No. 527.
The Boulder Bar in El Portal offers a geological curiosity: it contains exceptionally large boulders, which are rare in deposits of this kind. In El Portal, archaeological evidence of human use sits alongside a striking geological feature.
Walks, Rafting, and Hiking Trail
Guided walks are offered in the El Portal area, including excursions focused on wildflowers and birds. Guided whitewater rafting trips begin in El Portal in spring and early summer. A quiet hiking trail connects the upper part of El Portal with the higher-elevation community of Foresta. Planning varies by activity: check current dates for walks, and for rafting, check providers and dates before booking; for the trail, check current conditions.
Archives and Practical Services
The Yosemite Archives are located on Highway 140, just west of Yosemite National Park. An appointment is required to use the collections; confirm the appointment arrangements before your visit.
The El Portal Market is the last place to buy fuel on State Highway 140 before driving into Yosemite National Park. Its offerings include snacks, drinks, sandwiches to go, toiletries, and other travel essentials. Check current operating conditions before your trip.
