Mariposa: Yosemite, Giant Sequoias and Gold Rush History
Accommodation in Mariposa
Mariposa County is home to Yosemite National Park. Mariposa Grove is the largest giant sequoia grove in the park, with more than 500 mature giant sequoias. When planning your hotel stay, you might first consider which themes will shape your trip: nature, hiking trails, museums or Gold Rush history. The region offers its own points of interest in each of these areas.
Nature and trails in different seasons
The Merced River Trail follows the former Yosemite Valley Railroad route for 28 miles. It runs from Bagby on Highway 49 to El Portal, near the Arch Rock Entrance to Yosemite National Park. An important planning note: the entire trail is not maintained. In the Merced River Recreation Management Area downstream from Yosemite, opportunities include whitewater rafting, wildflower viewing, camping, swimming and recreational gold panning or prospecting. The area is known for recreational gold panning and prospecting, and hiking is possible year-round.
Winter at Mariposa Grove offers different options from driving there: the trails remain open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while Mariposa Grove Road is closed to cars from late November through at least April 1. Since winter conditions can change, check the latest information before your trip. The Hite Cove Trail is also seasonal. Wildflowers usually peak between March and May. In summer, the trail is closed because of fire danger; in winter, some sections may be inaccessible due to poor trail conditions.
The history of the Hite Cove area goes back a long way: the Ahwahneechees used it for more than 1,000 years, mainly in winter and spring, and returned to their ancestral land in Yosemite Valley. Another trail, the Stockton Creek Preserve Trail, is designated for hiking and mountain biking. It runs through Stockton Creek Preserve, which includes Stockton Creek, a small lake and a waterfall. Check local trail conditions before your visit.
Museums and Gold Rush history
The California State Mining and Mineral Museum brings together a collection and exhibits on mining history. Its collection includes more than 13,000 objects and was started in 1880. The museum also features a mine tunnel and a working, scale model of an ore stamp mill. Both individual objects and technical examples are showcased there.
Exhibits at the Mariposa Museum & History Center tell the stories of Indigenous people, Spanish settlement, the California Gold Rush, Yosemite and Mariposa County. Tours also cover the history of the town of Mariposa, the local Southern Sierra Miwuk, the regional Gold Rush and mining. Check tour availability before your trip.
Mariposa County Courthouse is another historic attraction: built in 1854, it is considered the oldest continuously operating courthouse west of the Rocky Mountains. Mormon Bar was first mined in 1849 by members of the Mormon Battalion. These places represent different chapters in the region's history, from early mining to the public preservation of landscapes.
On June 30, 1864, a law signed by President Abraham Lincoln transferred Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove to the State of California for public use, recreation and enjoyment. It was the first federal authorization to preserve scenic and scientific values for public benefit.
Visiting and seasonal planning
If Wawona is part of your travel plans, Yosemite Area Regional Transportation (YARTS) offers seasonal public transportation there. Check the schedule before your trip. The Yosemite Archives are located in El Portal on Highway 140, just west of the park. An appointment is required to use the archival collections; check the policy before your visit.
Splash-N-Dash Aqua Park is located on Lake McClure in northwestern Mariposa County. Its seasonal operating schedule may vary. The different themes and seasons can help you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.
