In Tiburon, cultural history, trails, and waterside activities offer different ways to shape your stay. When looking for a hotel, you might first consider whether you are most interested in railroad and architectural history, enjoy getting around on foot or by bike, or want to include views and waterfront activities. The places and offerings vary considerably, so you can focus your search on the themes that matter to you.

Cultural History and Distinctive Buildings

The Railroad & Ferry Depot Museum explores Tiburon's railroad and maritime history. Its exhibits include a working HO-scale model of the railroad town of Tiburon from around 1900 to 1910. It offers a vivid connection to this era and complements the museum's historical focus.

Old St. Hilary's is one of the few surviving Carpenter Gothic churches that has remained at its original site. Directly adjacent is the John Thomas Howell Wildflower Preserve, home to several rare plants. Blooming is seasonal. Guided tours of the preserve's trails can be arranged by appointment, so if you would like to take part, plan to arrange a time in advance.

Another place to explore architecture and gardens is the Art & Garden Center. The cottage there dates from around 1870 and is considered the oldest building on the Tiburon Peninsula. Garden paths connect the lawn with the terraces, and there are also panoramic views of Richardson Bay. Tiburon thus brings together different forms of heritage: a museum focused on railroad and maritime history, a surviving church, and a historic cottage in a garden setting.

Old Rail Trail: On Foot or by Bike

The Old Rail Trail is a flat route for walking or cycling between Downtown Tiburon and Blackie's Pasture. A life-size bronze sculpture of the horse Blackie stands at Blackie's Pasture; the trail starts there and runs for 2.5 miles to Main Street in Tiburon as a multi-use path. Historical photographs line the route. Along the way, there are views of Richardson Bay, Mount Tamalpais, Tiburon Ridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The trail thus combines a specific route with several different experiences: you can treat it as a walk or bike ride, see historical photographs along the way, and take in views of the natural landmarks mentioned above. If you include the trail in your day's plans, keep in mind that conditions on the trail can change.

Waterfront Views and Activities

Views in Shoreline Park stretch from the San Francisco skyline and Angel Island to the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. The park is suitable for picnicking and watching sailboats. Elephant Rock is easily accessible from Shoreline Park. This makes it possible to combine a view of the bay with a brief exploration of the surrounding area.

At Paradise Beach State Park, visitors can launch kayaks and fish from the pier. Water conditions and access can vary; conditions and regulations for fishing can also change. If you plan these activities, check the conditions that apply during your visit. Shoreline Park and Paradise Beach State Park thus offer different reasons to spend time by the water: views and a picnic or watching sailboats at one, and launching a kayak or fishing from the pier at the other.

Planning the Ferry Connection and Your Hotel Search

A ferry runs between Tiburon and Angel Island. Bicycles are allowed on the Angel Island–Tiburon Ferry; the bicycle policy may change. Since the schedule may also change, it's a good idea to check it before planning a crossing. This lets you take the ferry connection and possible bicycle transport into account in a way that suits your own plans, without assuming they are part of every stay.

Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay, and compare suitable hotel options in Tiburon. The places and activities mentioned can help you choose your destination; check the specific features of individual hotels in each listing.
