San Rafael brings together architecture, mission history, art, and nature watching. When planning a hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between these themes: buildings and institutions offer different historical points of reference, exhibitions follow a schedule, and McInnis Park focuses on sports and landscape. This can help you decide which interests you want to shape your stay.

Architecture and History

The Marin County Civic Center is Frank Lloyd Wright’s largest surviving building. Boyd Gate House offers a different perspective on architectural history: built in 1879 in the Victorian Gothic Revival style, it served as a guesthouse for the neighboring family home, Maple Lawn. Since 1959, it has housed the Marin History Museum, formerly known as the Marin County Historical Society. In 1974, the U.S. Department of the Interior added the house to the National Register of Historic Places. Its original function, later use as a museum, and historic designation place the same building in different historical contexts.

At Mission San Rafael, the founding story and the replica belong to different points in time. The mission was founded on December 14, 1817, as an asistencia, or auxiliary mission, of Mission Dolores in San Francisco. Mission San Rafael Arcangel is a replica built in 1949 of the original Spanish mission, which was built in 1817. Self-guided visits are available in the Mission Chapel. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Art and Exhibitions

Five to six art exhibitions are planned each year at the Falkirk Cultural Center for 2026, each lasting approximately six weeks. The exhibition schedule may change, so check the current dates before visiting. Art Works Downtown has four galleries and 27 artist studios. The details highlight different aspects: at Falkirk, the number and duration of exhibitions; at Art Works Downtown, the galleries and studios.

McInnis Park and Local Offerings

McInnis Park combines sporting activities with views of the landscape at McInnis Marsh. The park has an award-winning skatepark for all skill levels. A trail offers views of McInnis Marsh and the tidal flats, where birds gather. This brings two different interests together: skating and nature watching. Trail access, skatepark rules, and wildlife sightings may change; check the conditions before your visit.

The Thursday Marin Farmers Market is also known as the “Chef’s Market.” Offerings include hyperlocal meat as well as specialty pastries and breads. Since the selection may change, it’s best to check shortly before your visit if a particular product is important to your plans. This makes the market a distinct culinary highlight alongside architecture, history, art, and nature.
