Discover Sutter Creek
Accommodation in Sutter Creek
Sutter Creek lies in the heart of the Sierra Foothill Wine Region. On a hotel stay, you can get to know the town from different perspectives: Knight Foundry represents water-powered foundry and machine works, while the schoolhouse and former general store offer further chapters in local history. A historic walking map focuses on exploring on foot; the farmers market adds a seasonal event to your plans. The different historical themes and dates can help you match your interests with your travel dates.
Engineering History and Events at Knight Foundry
Samuel Knight founded Knight Foundry in 1873. It is America’s last water-powered foundry and machine shop, and is recognized as both a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark and a California Registered Historical Landmark. The foundry and machine shop go hand in hand here, bringing together two aspects of historic technology under one theme. Historic blacksmithing, antique machinery, and sand casting are demonstrated at Knight Foundry. Open Saturdays take place year-round on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Check the specific dates before your trip so you can include the demonstrations and recurring opening day in your plans.
Schoolhouse and General Store
The Historic Sutter Creek Schoolhouse is a two-story brick schoolhouse built in 1870. The Monteverde Store Museum opened as a general store in 1896—26 years after the schoolhouse was built. The years mark different events: construction of the schoolhouse and the store’s opening. The Monteverde Store Museum preserves historic store inventory and displays merchandise and furnishings from its time as a general store. Together, a school building and the stock of a former store offer different ways to explore local history: one through the type of building, the other through its merchandise and furnishings.
Background and Exploring on Foot
The Sutter Creek Visitors Center offers historic photographs, artifacts, and information about Sutter Creek and its surroundings. There is also a historic walking map for exploring the town on foot. These two resources have different focuses: the Visitors Center covers local and regional history, while the map is geared toward walking through town. If you’re interested in the history of the surrounding area, you’ll find information about it at the Visitors Center; if you want to explore Sutter Creek on foot, the walking map is a useful planning resource.
Seasonal Farmers Market
In 2026, the Sutter Creek Farmers Market runs from May through October, every Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on North Main Street. For planning purposes, this seasonal event differs from Knight Foundry’s open Saturdays: the market is limited to part of the year, while open Saturdays take place year-round on two Saturdays each month. If you’re prioritizing either of these activities for your trip, plan your dates accordingly and check the specific dates before your visit.
