Amador County: Gold History, Caves and Wine
Accommodation in Amador County
Amador County stretches from rolling foothills to the high country south of Lake Tahoe. Miwok culture, gold mining and winemaking are among its defining themes. Rock formations and caves sit alongside museums, historic buildings, wine tastings and a scenic rail journey. This lets you choose a focus for your trip.
Miwok Culture and Gold History
Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park preserves an outcrop of marbleized limestone with 1,185 mortar holes—the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America. The park also includes a ceremonial roundhouse and reconstructed bark houses. The Chaw’se Regional Indian Museum presents examples of the technologies and crafts of the Miwok and other Indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada. Its collection includes materials from the Northern, Central and Southern Miwok, as well as the Maidu, Konkow, Monache, Nisenan, Tubatulabal, Washo and Foothill Yokut.
Local museums and buildings also tell different chapters of the area’s history. The Knight Foundry in downtown Sutter Creek is America’s last water-powered foundry and machine shop. The Amador County Museum is housed in an 1854 Greek Revival building with 15 rooms. Its collections include an exhibit on gold history, as well as collections on Native American and Chinese American culture. In a separate building, the Mine Model Exhibit displays working scale models of a Kennedy Mine headframe, a hard-rock mine headframe and a stamp mill.
Preston Castle was built in 1894 as the administrative building of the Preston School of Industry. It is a California State Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Preston Castle offers public and private tours; check availability in advance if you plan to take a tour.
Caves, Mining and Trails
Black Chasm Cavern was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 1976. A guided, 50-minute walk winds through the formation-covered caverns and passes Lake Reflection. Gem panning is also offered at the mining sluices outside the visitor center. Tour schedules and the availability of this activity may change, so check in advance if you plan to do both.
The Kennedy Gold Mine reached a depth of 5,912 feet and was one of the deepest gold mines in the world. Guided walks around the site last about 1.5 hours. Together with the shorter cave walk, this tour gives you a practical basis for planning your time; tour times may change, so check the schedule before your visit.
For a different way to experience the landscape, Rail Explorers Amador offers an eight-mile round trip on specially built electric rail vehicles. The route crosses rolling hills and offers panoramic views from the Sierra Nevada foothills to the Coast Ranges. Reservations and schedules may change. C&C Ranch also has single-track and accessible trails available to the community.
Wine and Seasonal Experiences
The California Shenandoah Valley American Viticultural Area includes parts of Amador County and El Dorado County. Many wineries in Shenandoah Valley offer wine tastings and tours; individual winery schedules may vary. Family-owned Vino Noceto in Amador County is known for high-quality Sangiovese wines. It offers a complimentary wine tasting and a farm-to-glass tour. If you plan to take part in either, check availability in advance.
Amador Flower Farm also offers a variety of experiences: it has more than 1,200 daylily varieties and several acres of themed gardens. In fall, a pumpkin patch and corn maze are added; seasonal offerings may change. This makes it possible to consider a garden visit and the wine region as separate areas of interest alongside the historic sights.
