Chambers: West Point Lake, Nature and History
Accommodation in Chambers
At West Point Lake, water activities meet a broad shoreline landscape; nature trails, bird species and the county’s history offer more specific themes for a trip to Chambers. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.
West Point Lake and Water Activities
West Point Lake is a man-made reservoir formed by the West Point Dam on the Chattahoochee River. It stretches 35 miles along the river on the border between Alabama and Georgia and has about 525 miles of shoreline in total. Activities available at the lake include fishing, camping and boating. These three activities offer different reasons to set aside time by the water. The West Point Dam parks are on the Alabama side of West Point Lake. If you are planning outings from Chambers County, this location offers a specific point of reference.
Nature Trails and Birdwatching
The Alligator Creek Trail is one mile long. The Alligator Creek Nature Trail and the Beaver Creek Interpretive Trail pass through a diverse landscape with habitats ranging from wetlands to forests of varying ages. Wetland areas and woodland are therefore among the defining natural features of these trails. Yellowthroats, Swamp Sparrows, Pileated Woodpeckers and Great Horned Owls occur along the trails at the Alligator Creek Nature Trail. For nature enthusiasts, the landscape here goes hand in hand with specific species to look out for. If you would like to include birdwatching in your trip, these species offer a point of interest alongside the water activities at West Point Lake.
County History and Joe Louis
The Chambers County Museum is housed in the former Central of Georgia Railway depot and features exhibits about life in the county in earlier times. Its collections include an extensive collection of regional pottery from Alabama’s early history. The pieces were made from clays from Chambers County and Randolph County. One exhibit includes scrapbooks, photographs, trophies and a pair of boxing gloves. If this particular exhibit is a key reason for your museum visit, confirm current exhibit details in advance.
Another local link to history leads to Joe Louis: he was born in rural Chambers County and lived there until his early teens. From 1937 to 1949, he was the world heavyweight boxing champion. The Joe Louis Statue is eight feet tall and depicts the boxer. Together, the biography and statue give your visit a clear connection to a well-known figure from the county’s history. The museum, in turn, uses its exhibits and pottery collection to focus on other aspects of life in the region in earlier times.
More Regional Highlights
Fort Tyler also offers a regional connection to history: it is located in the two cities of Lanett, Alabama, and West Point, Georgia. There are access points for the Chattahoochee River at Old Shawmut Airport Boat Landing, Langdale Boat Landing and River View Boat Landing. These are specific reference points for river activities, in addition to the options at the lake. In Valley, the Farmers’ Market offers locally grown seasonal vegetables for purchase. This adds a seasonal food market to nature and history as another regional highlight.
