Cullman County Between History and Nature
Accommodation in Cullman County
For your trip planning, Cullman County offers a range of highlights: historic sites and art, water and nature experiences, and seasonal events. When looking for a hotel, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Interstate and highway connections make it easy to travel to the county.
History, Museums, and Art
The Clarkson Covered Bridge was built in 1904 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1974. Its construction and listing mark two milestones in its history. The Cullman County Museum is housed in a replica of John Cullmann’s home and also presents the history of Native Americans in the Cullman area.
Ave Maria Grotto opened in 1934 on the grounds of a former quarry used by an abbey. The Crooked Creek Civil War Museum is located in the historic 19th-century Vinemont Stagecoach Inn. Weiss Cottage features 19th-century furnishings as well as some of Aldo Weiss’s original medical equipment.
Public art is also among the area’s cultural attractions: The Cullman Murals are a growing outdoor art experience in the Warehouse District and are part of the statewide Alabama Mural Trail. At the Art Park on 2nd Street SW, large-scale sculptures also serve as seating, provide shade, and offer places to gather.
Lakes, a Gorge, and Trails
Duck River is a 640-acre man-made reservoir open to the public for outdoor recreation. Smith Lake is known in Cullman County for its clear water and scenic shoreline. Boating, fishing, and swimming are available there. Smith Lake Park adds swimming, camping, and fishing to the options; its facilities include a public beach, boat ramps, and playgrounds.
For a different landscape, visit Hurricane Creek Park, which lies in a deep gorge carved by Hurricane Creek. Its many trails wind through wooded terrain and past rock formations and cliffs. Stony Lonesome OHV Park is designed for motorized recreation and accommodates ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides. Its trails range from easy rides to more challenging climbs. Keep in mind when planning that park rules and operating schedules may change.
Agriculture, Food, and Events
North Alabama Agriplex is an interactive destination for rural heritage and local food culture. Its offerings include agricultural exhibits, seed displays, community gardens, seasonal farmers’ markets, workshops, and event days; programs and market days may vary. The seasonal 4D Farm combines large slides and a corn maze with a farm animal area, a play barn, and bounce pads. Seasonal offerings may vary here, too.
At Bloom Winery, offerings include handcrafted wines, wood-fired pizzas, seasonal small plates, and charcuterie boards. Live music and community events depend on the date. Check current offerings before your visit.
Recurring events add further cultural highlights, though their dates vary. Cullman’s Oktoberfest celebrates the city’s German heritage with music, cultural traditions, and food. The Cullman County Fair features rides, fair food, livestock and agricultural exhibits, competitions, and entertainment. The Christkindlmarkt is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and offers seasonal food and shopping. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance.
