Kalkan combines coastal scenery, water sports and a largely preserved townscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Kalkan, these different aspects can shape the focus of your trip: time at the beach, diving, or an interest in history and architecture. Excursion destinations also vary in terms of distance and access.

Coast and Water Sports

Kalkan Beach is a pebble beach surrounded by rocky terrain, with crystal-clear water. Snorkeling, other water sports and parasailing are offered there. The availability of these activities may vary depending on the provider and season. If you are planning a particular activity, check whether it is available during your visit.

For scuba diving, Kalamar Bay is a specific point of reference: diving is possible there in calm seawater. Kalkan is also considered suitable for beginner divers. Possible sightings while diving in Kalamar Bay include Mediterranean wrasse, barracudas, sea bream, octopuses and sea turtles.

Sports activities in Kalkan also include hiking and cycling. These activities appeal to different travel interests than snorkeling or diving.

Architecture and History

Kalkan’s architectural structure and townscape have largely been preserved. One specific point of reference in the history of its buildings is Kalkan Koca Mustafa Camii: it was built in 1888 during the reign of Abdülhamit II by the Greek Orthodox community in Kalkan as the Church of the Mother of God. Today, it is one of two mosques in the Old Town and, as a former Orthodox church, still has a small cross on its roof.

The building was constructed from roughly hewn stone in a single-nave basilica layout. Its architectural features include a dome, vaults and a narthex. A narthex is a vestibule at a church building; the single-nave layout describes the shape of the interior. Alongside the building’s historic date, specific structural elements are therefore also a focus.

Beach Destinations and Access

Kaputaş Beach lies on the coastal road between Kaş and Kalkan, 7 kilometers from Kalkan. The beach is reached by 187 steps. Güvercinlik Sea Cave is 2 kilometers from Kalkan and can be reached by boat. Its name refers to the many pigeons that live there.

Mavi Mağara, also known as the Blue Grotto, is one of Kalkan’s coves and can only be reached by boat. The three destinations therefore also differ in how they can be accessed: steps lead to Kaputaş Beach, while both caves require a boat trip. Boat availability may vary. So check in advance whether a trip to Güvercinlik Sea Cave or access to Mavi Mağara is possible during your visit.

Kalkan’s marina is also part of its maritime character. It meets the needs of the boats that call there.
