Finike combines historic traces within the town with destinations in the surrounding area. If you would like to include culture and archaeology in your trip, you can explore the town center and nearby places as different points of interest. In Finike itself, these include ancient and later architectural remains, as well as the Finike Kültür Evi; Arykanda and Andre Dorya Bay are nearby.

Historic Sites in the Center of Finike

According to local tradition, Phoinikos, the ancient predecessor of Finike, was founded on the site of today's İskele Mahallesi district. Acıçay also served a historic function: goods were loaded and unloaded there, as it served as a harbor. Thus, both an early settlement tradition and the handling of goods at Acıçay are among the recorded aspects of the town's history.

Among the most important visible historic remains in the center are several rock-cut tombs on the northern edge of the cliff opposite Finike State Hospital, as well as another rock-cut tomb near the former prison. Preserved wall remains show several chronological layers: they date from the Hellenistic period, with a lower section from the Roman period and an upper one from the Byzantine period. The tower opposite Atatürk Park combines traces of two of these periods.

The Finike Kültür Evi is located in the former Historic Customs Building, which served the customs administration for many years. Following a faithful restoration, the building now houses a museum with cultural objects. It is right next to Finike Liman Kalesi, which is mentioned in Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname. The former customs building, its current function as a museum, and the historic reference to the harbor fortress are therefore closely connected geographically.

Historic remains can also be seen in Cumhuriyet Park: some of the pieces on display there are attributed to the late Byzantine period. Together with the tombs, wall remains, and tower, they make for a tour through different types and periods of Finike's visible history.

Culture and Events

The municipality built the Hamam-Sauna complex in 1993. In its modern interpretation, it draws on influences from Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and offers a traditional hamam experience for local and international visitors. For travelers who would like to experience bathing culture in addition to historic sites, it offers a distinct cultural attraction in Finike.

The 36th Finike Festival and the 100th anniversary of Maritime and Cabotage Day were celebrated over three days with events showcasing culture, art, and maritime traditions. The 2026 celebration included a boat-decorating competition, a boat race, and a swimming competition. The festival also featured the traditional “Yağlı direkten bayrak alma” competition: participants climb a greased pole to reach a flag.

Nearby Destinations

The nearby ancient city of Arykanda offers a different archaeological focus. Its buildings include an odeon, a well-preserved theater, a stadium, and a bouleuterion. There is also an agora with shops carved into the rock, a temple dedicated to the sun god Helios, and villas with partly preserved mosaic floors. The large bath-gymnasium complex is considered Arykanda's most impressive and best-preserved structure. These buildings show the range of different areas represented at this nearby ancient site.

Nearby Andre Dorya Bay offers a different experience. Visitors can sunbathe on the rocks, swim in the calm water, and picnic beneath the trees. Those wishing to include both historic sites and time at a bay in their travel plans can consider these destinations as options for different interests during their stay.
