Uçhisar: Castle, Rock Valleys and Culture
Accommodation in Uçhisar
Uçhisar combines striking rock formations with cultural and natural attractions. When looking for a hotel in Uçhisar, you can start by asking yourself whether the castle, the valleys, or walking and cycling routes will be the main focus of your trip.
Castle and Güvercinlik Valley
Uçhisar Castle consists of two huge neighboring cones, known as Ağa’nın Kalesi and Çavuş’un Kalesi. Their names and distinctive shape offer a concrete introduction to the area’s rock architecture. Güvercinlik Valley is also closely connected to its rocky landscape: it takes its name from dovecotes carved into the rock.
The valley begins in Uçhisar, reaches Göreme, and extends for four kilometers. Its landscape features include a waterfall that plunges from a height of 15 meters. You can explore Güvercinlik Valley on foot to see the dovecotes and natural vegetation. Here, both the structures carved into the rock by people and the natural environment come to the fore in the same valley.
Rock Landscapes and Views
Vasıl Deresi is a valley in the Uçhisar area, known for its natural beauty and historic rock structures. The Derebağ-Cevizli area offers a different emphasis: it is considered peaceful and is known for its rock-carved houses and walnut trees; its attractions include natural and historic features. The two names thus represent different aspects of the landscape and traditional building forms.
Cevizlibağ lies on the northern edge of the Uçhisar settlement. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of Uçhisar Castle and the fairy chimneys around it. If views of the rock formations are important when planning your trip, this viewpoint differs from the valley areas, which are characterized by their rock structures and vegetation.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
Both a walking exploration and a cycling route are described for Güvercinlik Valley. The cycling route from the valley to the Göreme Open-Air Museum starts in Uçhisar, follows the paths through Güvercinlik Valley, and reaches the museum. It therefore combines a route through the valley with a named destination. By contrast, a walk in the valley focuses on the dovecotes and natural vegetation.
A 2021 overview of nature-walking areas in Nevşehir lists Beyaz Valley and Meskendir Valley near Uçhisar as nature-walking areas. Cevizli Valley appears in an overview as an area for observing wildlife. These designations offer additional themes for trip planning: nature walks and wildlife observation. The specific descriptions of these places differ from the cycling route, which has a stated starting point, course, and destination.
If you are traveling by car, Uçhisar Castle is on the road between Ürgüp and Göreme. This road location complements the landscape and activity themes without implying a particular route through the town.
Culture in the Wider Nevşehir Destination
The wider Nevşehir destination offers additional cultural and historical attractions. Karanlık Kilise, also known as the Dark Church, is located in the Göreme Valley in the Cappadocia region and within a monastic complex that is part of the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Its frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus and images of saints. The church dates to the late 11th or early 12th century. Only a little light entered through a small window in the narthex, or vestibule, which helped preserve the frescoes’ particularly vivid colors. The Göreme Open-Air Museum has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural and cultural heritage site since December 6, 1985.
The wider destination also offers a varied architectural history. The Damat-İbrahim-Paşa Complex was built in 1726–1727 by Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa. It includes a mosque, a madrasa, a caravanserai, an elementary school, an imaret, a bathhouse, and two fountains. The İbrahim-Paşa Mosque has a square prayer hall and a large dome supported by pendentives.
Kaymaklı Underground City offers another insight into underground architecture: its interconnected areas include rooms, storage areas, kitchens, ventilation shafts, wells, and a church. Large sliding stone doors were used for security. These examples from Nevşehir complement Uçhisar’s rock architecture and landscape with distinctive aspects of the wider destination.
