When looking for a hotel in Boğaz, the destination’s defining character can influence your choice. Boğazköy obsidian provides a specific geological point of reference for the area. The wider destination of Nevşehir adds cultural and landscape themes. As you plan your trip, you can weigh whether volcanic history is your main interest, or whether historic buildings and regional cultural landscapes also play a part.

Boğazköy Obsidian: Formation and Shape

Boğazköy obsidian occurs in black and red. It formed when lava that emerged from fissures around the Acıgöl Caldera cooled rapidly. The deposit lies at the edge of the caldera; its source is in the area around Kocadağ. Geologically, it belongs to the second eruptive phase of the rhyolitic Acıgöl Complex.

The obsidian runs in narrow zones along fissures. Obsidian that extends in this way is called a dike. The Boğazköy obsidian dikes are listed as volcanic geomorphosites in the Kapadokya Jeopark.

Boğazköy obsidian is approximately 160,000 to 180,000 years old. The deposit at the edge of the Acıgöl Caldera is dated to 0.15 to 0.175 million years ago; the obsidian in the caldera domes is younger, at 0.15 to 0.075 million years old. A massive lava flow spread out in a fan-shaped pattern and in stages as far as the present-day plain of Boğazköy.

The textures also offer a more detailed picture: Boğazköy obsidian hand samples display spherulitic and amygdaloidal textures. The spherulites are 1 to 5 cm in size, occur as individual, composite, or clustered crystals, and are surrounded by volcanic glass. The terms therefore describe different aspects: “dike” refers to the narrow zone along fissures, while the texture terms describe features of the hand samples.

Nevşehir as a Wider Cultural and Landscape Setting

Within the wider destination of Nevşehir, Merkez İlçe lies in the heart of the Cappadocia region. The Karanlık Kilise is located in the Göreme Valley in Cappadocia, in a monastic complex that is part of the Göreme Open-Air Museum. The open-air museum has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural and cultural heritage site since December 6, 1985.

The Karanlık Kilise dates to the late 11th or early 12th century. A small window in the narthex let in very little light, helping the colors of its frescoes remain particularly vivid. The frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus as well as images of saints.

Another historic site in Nevşehir is the Damat İbrahim Paşa Complex. It was built in 1726–1727 by Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa and includes a mosque, a madrasa, a caravanserai, a primary school, an imaret, a bathhouse, and two fountains.

Güvercinlik Valley is also part of the wider landscape of Nevşehir. It stretches for 4 kilometers from Uçhisar to Göreme. It takes its name from the dovecotes carved into the rocks.
