Avanos on the Kızılırmak: Pottery Tradition and Old Town
Accommodation in Avanos
Avanos lies on the banks of the Kızılırmak, the Red River. Its riverside location, pottery craft, and historic buildings offer concrete points of reference when choosing a travel destination.
Avanos by the river and its bridges
In the northern part of Avanos on the Kızılırmak are the old settlement, the bazaar, and government buildings. A section of the Kızılırmak riverbank embankment was laid out in 1969 to make it more suitable for walking. If you are planning a riverside walk, this section is a specific point of reference.
The two bridges also give the town a temporal and architectural framework. The wooden bridge was built in 1973. It is 180 meters long and 2.30 meters wide, stands on iron supports, and is designed exclusively for pedestrians. The historic stone bridge is different: construction began in 1898, and it opened in 1900. These dates show two distinct periods in Avanos’ bridge history, with the structures differing in both form and use.
Pottery craft and the Kızılırmak
The pottery tradition in Avanos has been known since the Hittite period and continues to this day. The river is therefore more than just part of the landscape: potters use clay from the nearby Kızılırmak to make ceramics and pottery. In this tangible way, the local craft tradition and the riverside landscape are connected.
Most pottery workshops are located within the town and consist of natural caves hewn into the rock; some are located outside it. The workshops are therefore not confined exclusively to the town limits. Another point of reference for the craft is the Çanakçı statue in Çarşı Meydanı, in the center of Avanos District. It symbolizes both pottery and carpet weaving.
Old town and historic buildings
The traditional houses in Avanos’ old town are mostly two stories high. Their features include stone vaults and fine stone and woodwork. This design distinguishes the houses described here from a mere view of the street layout: the vaults and craftsmanship in the materials are themselves prominent features of the local architectural history.
The Dr. Hacı Nuri Bey Konağı has its own architectural history. Mehmet Nuri Bey had the three-story building constructed from local stone in 1902. It once served as a government office and was later used for many years as a Tekel building. The historic Konağı houses the Kapadokya Yaşayan Miras Müzesi, which is dedicated to presenting, preserving, and passing on the region’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Further traces of the town’s history
Alaaddin Mosque is located in the center of Avanos District. Its Ottoman Turkish inscription gave the year 1202; the inscription was stolen. Yamanlı Church is also part of the local architectural history. It is located in the Yeni Mahalle neighborhood and is considered an old church believed to represent the Christian culture of the 4th to 6th centuries. This attribution is a different kind of historical classification from the specific construction and use dates of the Konağı or the bridges.
