The Tajik National Park covers almost the entire Pamir Mountains and 2,611,674 hectares. Tajikistan thus combines high mountain regions and lakes with archaeological sites, museums and living traditions. If you are planning a trip with hotel stays, first consider whether mountains and nature or culture and history will shape your stops.

Mountains and Lakes: Different Travel Highlights

The Fann Mountains reach elevations of up to 5,489 metres; you can hike and mountaineer there. The Fedchenko Glacier is the longest glacier in the world outside the polar regions. At Lake Sarez, behind the Uzoi Dam—the world's highest natural dam—lies another striking landscape. Lake Karakul is believed to be the world's highest large lake of meteoritic origin.

For trip planning, Iskanderkul and the Kulikalon Lakes offer different starting points. Iskanderkul lies at an elevation of about 2,195 metres and covers approximately 3.5 square kilometres. Hiking, picnicking and photography are popular activities there; the lake is accessible by car from Dushanbe. The Kulikalon Lakes were formed by melting glacial ice, and there are trekking routes in the surrounding mountains. You can reach the base camp by jeep; from there, continue on foot.

Fishing and water sports are possible at the Nurek Reservoir. The Nurek Hydroelectric Power Plant is accessible by car or bus from Dushanbe. A guided tour lets you visit the power plant and its turbine hall; it also includes panoramic views of the reservoir. Check before your trip whether the tour is being offered.

Protected Nature and Biodiversity

The Tigrovaya Balka Nature Reserve is in southwestern Tajikistan, between the Vakhsh and Panj rivers, on the border with Afghanistan. It has been a state nature reserve since 1938. Its natural vegetation complex includes Asian poplars and tugai vegetation. Protected areas cover a total of 22 percent of the country. Protected species found in Tajikistan and listed in the Red Book include Marco Polo sheep, markhor, snow leopards and Bukhara deer.

Archaeology, History and Architecture

Sarazm bears witness to the development of human settlements in Central Asia from the 4th millennium BC to the end of the 3rd millennium BC. The site also demonstrates trade and cultural exchange that extended from the steppes of Central Asia and Turkmenistan across the Iranian Plateau and the Indus Valley to the Indian Ocean. The Ancient Khuttal World Heritage site comprises 11 components and represents cultural exchange and change in northeastern Bactria and Tokharistan over several centuries.

Vamar Fortress overlooks the Panj, which forms a natural border with Afghanistan, and is a landmark along the Pamir Highway. The Hulbuk Historical Museum Complex is a museum reserve covering 16 hectares. Its surviving remains include the citadel, the palace and the ruins of several ancient structures.

Culture, Cuisine and Museums

The Chakan embroidery art was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018. Oshi Palav is also part of everyday cultural life: the dish has up to 200 variations and is prepared and eaten both for regular meals and at social gatherings, celebrations and rituals.

At the National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan, you can see frescoes from ancient Panjakent depicting the life and culture of the Sogdians in the 7th century. The museum also has a dedicated exhibition of Buddhist art. Guided tours are available for individuals and groups; check availability before your visit.
