Qal’at al-Bahrain is an artificial settlement mound; its layers show continuous human presence from around 2300 BC to the 16th century AD. Bahrain’s heritage is also reflected in its museums, architecture and the Pearling Path, each offering a different focus for planning your trip.

Archaeology, Museums and the Pearling Path

The Qal’at al-Bahrain Site Museum presents five distinct historical periods in separate galleries arranged chronologically. At the Bahrain National Museum, you can gain insight into part of Bahrain’s 6,000-year history. Its six main halls include “Customs and Traditions” and “Traditional Crafts.”

The Pearling Path includes 17 buildings in Muharraq, three oyster beds, and part of Bu Maher Fort and its surrounding coastline. The route is about three kilometres long and takes visitors from house to house. Its approximate length and route between the houses give the path a clear framework, while its different stops bring the pearling heritage into focus.

At Bu Maher Fort, the visitor centre houses an illustrated map of the Pearling Trail and models of the sites along it. The relevant authority also offers boat trips daily between 10:00 and 18:00 from the Bahrain National Museum to the shore at Bu Maher Fort. Architecture, Crafts and Everyday Life

Sheikh Isa bin Ali House is an example of Islamic Gulf architecture. Four courtyards, intricately carved wooden doors and perforated plaster panels define its design. These varied architectural features offer visitors interested in architecture specific details to look out for during their visit.

In the village of A’ali, the royal burial mounds are the best-preserved and most impressive. Near the mounds, pottery workshops use traditional firing methods passed down through generations. Archaeological sites and a longstanding craft thus represent distinct aspects of local culture.

The old Manama Souq offers a different way to explore: its shops sell textiles, spices, incense, perfumes, handicrafts and souvenirs, and there are also traditional coffee houses. Haji’s Cafe’s daily menu ranges from traditional breakfast dishes to hearty grilled dishes and the signature machboos. If you want to try a particular dish, bear in mind that the menu varies daily.

Motorsport and Outdoor Activities

The Bahrain International Circuit was the first Formula One circuit to open in the Middle East. The Bahrain International Karting Circuit offers championships, mini Grand Prix races, track rides, off-track activities and driving training. The Tree of Life stands in Bahrain’s southern Sakhir Desert. Nearby, a visitor centre provides information about the tree and artefacts discovered in its surroundings. The Mohammed bin Zayed Natural Reserve offers the chance to explore diverse plant and animal life in the area open to the public. Another area is accessible only to specialists and researchers. Visitors can enjoy various water sports at Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach; cyclists can use a ten-kilometre cycling path there.
