Andelfingen lies on the south bank of the Thur in the Andelfingen district of the canton of Zurich. Thur, landscape and trails
The landscape along the Thur includes riverbanks, pebble beaches and slate banks, as well as floodplain forests, meadows, fields and woodland. A riverside walk starts and ends at Andelfingen railway station. It follows the Thur, crossing the ARA footbridge and passing old wooden bridges. Hiking routes associated with Andelfingen also include sections of the Thur Trail and paths through the Zurich Wine Country.
Another distinctive crossing over the river is the covered Thur Bridge. Built in 1815, it connects Kleinandelfingen and Andelfingen and is 71.85 metres long. This covered wooden bridge adds a historic structure, with clearly stated dimensions and a link between the two towns, to the impressions of the riverside walk.
The Andelfingen Vita Parcours also provides a specific reference point for planning physical activity: the fitness trail is 2.1 kilometres long and runs on and around the Isenberg. The riverside walk has a named starting and ending point at the railway station; for the fitness trail, the route length is a practical guide. This makes it possible to distinguish two different ways of exploring the area without combining them into a single route.
MĂĽlibach and the mill village
The MĂĽlibach canal system is a surviving record of pre-industrial grain processing in Andelfingen. For centuries, the stream powered up to six mills and ancillary businesses, including a sawmill, a grinding mill, a hemp-braking mill and an oil mill. The Halden Mill has been preserved in full working order to this day.
Those wishing to explore the Andelfingen mill village can book an excursion with a local guide. It lasts about two hours and can be booked year-round through the ProWeinland association. Unlike the 2.1-kilometre Vita Parcours, the excursion is described in terms of duration rather than distance, so the two activities can be assessed using different planning measures.
The castle and historical traces
Today’s Andelfingen Castle was built in 1740 as the residence of the then Zurich bailiff. The castle park is one of Switzerland’s most significant parks and is open to visitors free of charge during the day throughout the year. Check visitor information in advance. The town also has old half-timbered houses and other historically notable buildings. Cast-iron plaques on historically important buildings in Andelfingen and Kleinandelfingen provide information about their history and significance.
The Reformed Church of Andelfingen also tells of a specific turning point: it was demolished down to its foundations and rebuilt in 1666. In Laufen, west of the station, there are 21 graves dating from the La Tène period around 300 BC; a selection of the grave goods can be seen at the Swiss National Museum. These two examples lead from the town’s architectural history to archaeological traces from a much earlier period.

The selection may change, so check what is currently available before visiting. The Andelfingen fair is an annual event held on the second Wednesday in November. Getting there and finding your way
Andelfingen has a Zurich S-Bahn station, a main connection to the A4 national road and regional PostBus services.
