The village is part of the municipality of Echichens in the Morges district. Its character combines a scenic location with a history of winegrowing and a diverse architectural heritage. These highlights give you a practical basis for choosing a destination that suits your interests.

Between Lake Geneva and the Jura peaks

Saint-Saphorin-sur-Morges lies on a terrace of land that rises in stages from the shores of Lake Geneva towards the Jura peaks. A hill extending into a broad plateau further shapes the settlement. The village is considered one of the viewing balconies of the Côte Lémanique and offers a view of Lake Geneva. Two features come together here: the terraced landscape rising from the lakeshore towards the Jura, and the distinctly lakeside view.

The castle, temple and village history

The castle is a three-storey Neoclassical manor house, rebuilt around 1725. In the entrance courtyard is a wine press with a gable dating from 1807. Its walls contain remains of 14th-century fortifications. To the west of the castle, an elegant orangery stands in a garden. Together, these structures tell of different uses and periods, from the manor house and wine press to the older traces of fortifications.

The Temple de Saint-Saphorin-sur-Morges was built in 1731–1732 on the site of the former Church of Saint-Symphorien. Inside the temple is a funerary monument dating from 1740, which is under the protection of the Swiss Confederation. In iconographic terms, it is among the most complex in the country. The architecture and history of the monuments therefore cannot be reduced to a single building: the former church, the later temple and the funerary monument represent different periods in the village’s history.

The historic agricultural ensemble includes a cluster of farmhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The former two-storey schoolhouse, with its roof turret, dates from around 1844. Local events and figures also contribute to the village’s character: in 1802, Louis Reymond wrote and signed the manifesto of the Bourla-Papey peasant uprising at Saint-Saphorin College. George de Mestral, one of the castle’s former owners, invented Velcro.

Winegrowing and earlier traces

Winegrowing on the slope south of the castle dates back to the early 18th century. The vineyards around the castle produce a light and refined wine. Archaeological remains from Roman and Burgundian times in the surrounding area also point to a long history of human presence. Winegrowing and archaeological finds thus offer two different perspectives on the landscape over time: the use of the slope, maintained for centuries, and the much older settlement of the surrounding area.

Hiking trails in the village and region

The Morges–Vullierens hiking trail passes through St-Saphorin-sur-Morges and is rated T1 (easy). This rating gives you a practical indication of the stated level of difficulty. If the route is relevant to your plans, check the latest route information before setting out.

The Morges Région wine trail also runs through the municipality of Echichens. The regional description gives the route as running from Château de Vufflens to Morges, through wine-growing villages. As route details can change, it is advisable to check the current route before making specific plans.

A destination in the wider area

Château de Vullierens is also part of the wider region. The historic bridle path once connected the castles of Vullierens and Saint-Saphorin-sur-Morges. At Château de Vullierens, the bridle path is now a 400-metre walking trail leading to a hidden pond. The historic link between the two castles and the current description of the walking trail at Château de Vullierens can thus be understood as distinct aspects of the region’s history.
