Discover Morges: Château, Culture and Lakeside
Accommodation in Morges
Morges offers a stay focused on culture and the lakeside: the Château, several museums, Parc de l’Indépendance and a weekly market held year-round each offer something different. If you’re looking for a hotel in Morges, plan your days around whether you’re most interested in exhibitions, the market, the park or seasonal activities.
Château and museums: experience Morges’ history
The Château de Morges was built by Louis de Savoie between 1286 and 1291. With its four round towers, it faces Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva and is considered a typical example of the Savoyard castle type known as “carré savoyard.” The Château houses five museums, including the Musée Paderewski. Dedicated to Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), the Polish pianist, composer and politician, it presents a modern, interactive exhibition. An audio description is available for visitors with visual impairments; check in advance whether it is currently available.
The Musée Bolle hosts temporary exhibitions on the cultural heritage of Morges and its region in a distinguished 18th-century building. Every summer, a recurring exhibition explores the life of British actress Audrey Hepburn, usually from late June to early September. Dates and presentation may change, so check the current offering before your visit. The Musée Alexis Forel offers another perspective on the city’s history: it is Morges’ oldest museum and is housed in a 14th-century building listed as a Swiss cultural property of national importance. Its offerings include graphic art and printmaking as well as cultural outreach, concerts, readings and workshops; the program may vary.
The Protestant Temple also combines architectural history with culture. First built in the 14th century, it was rebuilt between 1769 and 1771 to plans by Erasme Ritter. Today, it is listed as a cultural property of national importance. Numerous classical music and organ concerts are held there throughout the year. If you’d like to attend a concert, check the latest program details.
Park, tulips and lakeside
Parc de l’Indépendance is on Lake Geneva, between the Château de Morges and the Morges River. More than 50 tree species are maintained there, including chestnut trees planted in 1750. In spring, the park hosts the Fête de la Tulipe, when more than 100,000 flowers adorn the grounds. The number of blooms and the program may vary. The park’s name recalls 24 January 1898: during celebrations marking the centenary of Vaud’s independence, the monument to Morgian patriots Jean-Jacques Cart, Jules Muret and Henri Monod was inaugurated that day.
The Promenade du littoral de Morges runs along the lakeshore from the Old Town and Parc de l’Indépendance to Préverenges. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility. As route conditions and accessibility information can change, check the latest details before your visit.
Market, guided tours and Petit Train
The traditional market is held year-round on Wednesday and Saturday mornings along the Grand-Rue. Alongside regional produce, it also offers handicrafts. If you’re visiting on a market day, it’s worth checking the latest schedule in advance.
In summer, Morges offers free guided tours subsidized by the city. From June to September, topics include famous figures, the city’s churches and architecture; topics may change from season to season. Private group tours can be booked year-round and must be arranged in advance. This lets you choose between a seasonal public offering and a tour organized in advance for a group.
The Petit Train touristique de Morges runs seasonally from April to October. The city tour described here follows the shores of Lake Geneva and passes through the historic center; the route also goes through historic lanes and vineyards. Another tour goes through the vineyards of La Côte and stops at a Vins de Morges winemaker for a guided tasting. Check schedules, departures and availability before your trip.
