Denens brings together a long château history, winemaking and an unusual scarecrow tradition. When planning a hotel stay, the town in the Morges district offers several points of interest: historic buildings, local wines and paths through the countryside.

Château and Church: Denens’ Historic Side

The recorded history of Château de Denens dates back to 1003. The château was a fortified house surrounded by a moat, with two drawbridges, four square towers and a keep. These features describe a complex built for defensive purposes. The château has changed little since around 1600.

The church is also part of the town’s historic character: today’s Church of Denens dates from the 15th century and is classified as a historic monument. The bell from the late 15th century, the pulpit and one stained-glass window in the church also have this classification. The historic interest therefore extends from the château’s history to individual features of the church.

Scarecrows and Recurring Festivals

Several scarecrows line the village and lend Denens its title of “World Capital of the Scarecrow.” The tradition is also reflected in festivals held at different intervals. Every two years, the “Nuit des Épouvantails” procession travels from Denens to Morges, where a giant scarecrow is burned. The traditional “Fête de l’Épouvantail,” by contrast, takes place about every five years.

If you would like to time your trip to coincide with one of the festivals, check the specific dates in advance. The roughly five-year interval between “Fête de l’Épouvantail” festivals should be distinguished from the biennial “Nuit des Épouvantails”; these recurring intervals do not establish a specific event date.

Winemaking and Regional Products

Vineyards cover 10 percent of the municipality and are part of the “La Côte” appellation. Two winemakers sell their products directly from the village of Denens. The Cave du Château de Denens offers a range of wines from the De Buren family, as well as regional products such as truffles from Denens. This sets winemaking in the municipality alongside specific local products as distinct aspects.

Fondue vigneronne is available at the Cave du Château by prior reservation. As the products on offer may change, it is advisable to check the current arrangements and make a reservation before visiting. This lets you combine an interest in wine and regional products with a specific dining plan without treating the offerings as interchangeable.

Countryside and Walking Routes

Denens offers views of the lake. The “Balade des trois châteaux” first follows the Morges and then heads to the vineyards above the town. A section through the woods along the Morges can only be reached on foot. The route includes a picnic area below Château de Denens. Check the trail conditions and the situation at the picnic area before setting out.

The “Du Pied du Jura au Léman” route is signposted in both directions. It runs between Denens and Vufflens-le-Château through vineyards above Lake Geneva. The route descriptions offer different guidance: for the “Balade des trois châteaux,” they describe the section along the Morges and the wooded stretch accessible only on foot; for “Du Pied du Jura au Léman,” the vineyard route and signage in both directions are key features.

Location in the Morges District

Denens borders Vufflens-le-Château, Chigny, Bussy-Chardonney, Villars-sous-Yens, Lussy-sur-Morges and Lully. Alongside the vineyards, Domaine du Brantard is part of the area’s rural character: since 2019, it has practised organic farming and implemented measures for fauna and flora, including hedgerows and an aquatic habitat. Sheep are also used to maintain its land. Agricultural practices may evolve. The Domaine also serves as a venue for themed events; the programme may change.
