Sion: Old Town, Museums and Vineyards
Accommodation in Sion
As the capital of the canton of Valais and the district of Sion, Sion lies in central Valais on both sides of the RhĂ´ne, at an altitude of around 510 metres above sea level. The old settlement centre is located north of the RhĂ´ne and is crossed by the Sionne, which flows into the RhĂ´ne here. When looking for a hotel in Sion, you can first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: medieval city history, museums, wine country, or trails and leisure activities. The following places range from the historic city centre to outdoor activities.
Old Town and Valais Cultural History
The medieval Old Town is considered one of the best-preserved in Switzerland. Its historic sights include the ruins of Tourbillon Castle and the fortified church of Valère; several museums illustrate the city’s heritage. This means that a stay can take in both architectural landmarks and a range of exhibition topics.
The Bishop of Sion had Tourbillon Castle built around 1300 as his residence. The permanent exhibition at the Musée d’histoire du Valais comprises more than 1,000 original objects and is located on the exceptional cultural heritage site of the fortified centre of Valère. Its scope ranges from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers to four-season tourism in the 21st century.
The Musée d’art du Valais offers a different focus: in the heart of Sion’s Old Town, it presents the art collection of the State of Valais and artistic projects. The museum terraces offer an impressive view of the Old Town, the surrounding castles, the vineyards and the mountains of central Valais. The choice between the two museums is therefore clear: Valais cultural history on the one hand, and an art collection and projects, along with views of the landscape, on the other.
Vineyards, Bisses and Activities
With 420 hectares of vineyards, Sion is considered the second-largest wine-growing municipality in Valais. Fendant is a particularly notable regional white wine. The bisses of Sion were built from the 13th century onwards to irrigate meadows and vineyards. Gently sloping hiking trails run alongside the channels; trail conditions may vary depending on the route. The specific trail is therefore important when planning your outing. You can also hike along irrigation channels known as suonen or bisses in nearby Valais vineyards.
The 55-hectare Domaine des Iles combines walking trails with a recreation and picnic area. If you would like to combine a walk with a picnic break, the area offers a suitable setting. Facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
AlaĂŻa Bay offers a different focus: its surf pool covers more than 8,300 square metres and caters to surfers of all levels. Operating arrangements may change, so check the latest conditions in advance.
Getting Here and Exploring the Region
Getting here may also be a factor in your decision. Sion is easily accessible by public transport and via the A9 motorway. Numerous bus services connect Sion with the valleys of Valais. If you plan to travel from the city to a particular valley, check the connection for your travel date. This is a useful distinction when choosing a hotel: will your plans stay within Sion, or would you also like to take bus connections to the Valais valleys into account?
