Mörel is a village in the municipality of Mörel-Filet in Upper Valais. The municipality lies on the banks of the Rhône, about ten kilometres northeast of Brig. Within the municipality, Mörel is on the northwest bank, while Filet is on the southeast bank. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: the hike to Tunetschalp starts at Mörel-Filet railway station and returns via Filet. The mountain railway connections and local trails also give you concrete points of reference for deciding whether Mörel fits the focus of your stay.

St. Hilarius Church and parish history

St. Hilarius Church brings together several historical building phases. The foundations of the church tower are Romanesque. The nave and choir were rebuilt in the Late Gothic style from 1527 to 1545 under Ulrich Ruffiner. Thus, the Romanesque foundations of the tower stand alongside the later Late Gothic structure. The parish of Mörel has existed since the 12th century. For those interested in religious architecture and local history, the history of the parish and the church’s distinct building phases complement one another.

Trails and tradition on Tunetschalp

The Marian chapel stands on the Bärgmatta terrace on Tunetschalp. The chapel festival on Tunetschalp takes place every year on 15 August. If you plan to attend, it is worth checking the programme before your trip. Three cultural and themed trails invite you to enjoy interesting and informative circular walks: the Chapel Trail, the Nieschrund Trail and the Lime Kiln Trail.

The moderately difficult circular hike from Mörel-Filet to Tunetschalp and back is 8.2 kilometres long and takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. It starts at Mörel-Filet railway station and returns via Filet. Along the way, the route passes through varied vegetation and natural and cultural landscapes with forests, meadows and alpine pastures. The circular hike gives you a concrete time estimate, while the three cultural trails focus on themed walks.

Salzgäb nature reserve and chestnut grove

The western part of Salzgäb is a nature reserve of cantonal importance and is part of the Salzgäb chestnut grove. An exhibition and information panels at the De Sepibus House provide information about the chestnut grove project. An existing trail, partly newly laid out, runs through the chestnut grove forest reserve. If you plan to visit the exhibition or walk the trail, check local conditions before your visit.

Mountain railway connections and mountain biking

Two mountain railways connect Mörel with Riederalp and the entire Aletsch Arena. If you plan to use these connections, check the timetable before travelling, as operating hours may change. For mountain bikers, the Moosfluh Enduro ends in Mörel, following a more technical descent through the mountain forest of the Aletsch Arena. The circular hike to Tunetschalp, by contrast, is a loop: it starts at Mörel-Filet railway station and returns via Filet.
