Morgins: Trails, Water and Mountain Activities
Accommodation in Morgins
Morgins is a holiday village in the canton of Valais and is politically part of the municipality of Troistorrents in the district of Monthey. When planning a stay, you can choose from different ways to explore the area: walking trails, an iron-rich spring, activities in Espace du Géant and routes to higher ground. If you are looking for hotels in Morgins, you can plan your days around whether you want to include a specified walking time, distinctive trail features, mountain lift rides or seasonal activities.
On foot: Pointe de Bellevue and Vallon de They
From the tourist office in Morgins, you can reach Pointe de Bellevue on foot in 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Pointe is 2,041 metres above sea level. This gives you both a specific starting point and a walking time for this destination—useful reference points when adding a hike to your day’s plans.
Vallon de They can be reached on foot from the village centre. Its promenade crosses 32 wooden bridges, each named after a local flower. The recurring floral theme gives the trail a distinctive character. Another natural feature in Morgins is L’Eau Rouge: the iron-rich spring turns the stones of the Vièze an ochre-red colour.
Mountain lift and outdoor activities
The 10-seat gondola connects Morgins village centre, at 1,350 metres, with the summit of Foilleuse, at 1,850 metres. This connection to higher ground is described differently from the route to Pointe de Bellevue: for the gondola, the starting point, destination and elevations are given, while the Pointe route also has a walking time.
Espace du Géant has a 2.5-kilometre forest archery course. Its 18 targets depict various animals from the region. Dévalkart rides on non-motorised vehicles also take place there; the ski lift is used to get back up. This activity is seasonal. Check availability before you arrive.
Ranch de Morgins offers guided pony and horse rides in both winter and summer. There are two different cycling options in the Morgins area: in the Champéry–Les Crosets–Morgins Bikepark, the Géant trail includes a route for beginners. By contrast, E-Bike Route 06 is a 26-kilometre, moderately difficult loop that starts in Morgins or Champoussin.
Lake, heritage and history
Lac de Morgins lies within the Morgins resort area in the municipality of Troistorrents, at an elevation of 1,367 metres. The lake covers 16.5 hectares and has been protected since 1978. It provides another specific landmark in the landscape around the village.
In the heart of the village, Le Carillon pour la Paix is an outdoor heritage feature. The mountain carillon has 23 bells, with two more in the church tower. Iron-rich water has also shaped the village’s history: from the 1820s onwards, Morgins developed into a bathing destination through its use for tourism. The former Grand Hôtel des Bains, built in 1846, hosted bathers from England, Germany and France. It was demolished in 1981.
The history of winter sports is also linked to a specific date. In 1961, Morgins became the first ski resort in Switzerland to agree on a partnership with the French winter sports resort of Châtel, laying the foundation for the Franco-Swiss Portes du Soleil winter sports area. Morgins is part of the Portes du Soleil winter sports area and is known for its ski resort.
