Reckingen is the oldest mountain village in Goms. When planning a stay, you can choose from several different highlights: Baroque church art, a chapel with its own works of art, buildings open to visitors, and the Reckingen–Gluringen Experience Trail. The train connection and a winter offering at the Gluringen ski lift also help you plan your visit.

Getting here by train

Regional trains operated by Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn take you from Brig to Reckingen in 1 hour and 3 minutes. Travel times may change when timetables are updated. Before you set off, check the current connection so you can factor the train journey into your travel plans.

Church and chapel

The church in Reckingen dates from 1743 to 1745 and is considered the most significant Baroque religious building in Upper Valais. Its richly colored interior features a plastered barrel vault with stucco and paintings. Two side altars and the high altar stand against the east wall of the raised choir. The church’s location also helps you find your way around the village: it stands on Furkastraße, which separates Oberdorf from Unterdorf.

Stalen Chapel offers a different focal point. It stands on a small plateau covered with larch trees at the entrance to the Blinnen Valley. Above the entrance door, a niche holds a copy of a statue of the Madonna by Johann Ritz. The painting on the choir’s exterior wall depicts two angels carrying a cross. The chapel’s particular points of interest—its location, the artwork above the entrance, and the painting on the choir—thus differ from the church’s interior.

Buildings at the heart of village life

In Reckingen, visitors can explore the lovingly renovated sawmill, mill, bell foundry, bakehouse, and washhouse. This selection offers a look at village culture beyond sacred architecture: the sawmill, mill, and bell foundry stand alongside buildings used for baking and washing. If you are interested in different types of buildings and their uses, this offers a distinct focus alongside the churches.

Experience trail and winter activities

The Reckingen–Gluringen Experience Trail is a 12.2-kilometer circular route that can also be walked in sections. It weaves themes into the landscape and engages the senses. The trail is open and accessible, with the exception of the Blinnen Valley. Bear this exception in mind and check the latest route information before setting off.

The Gluringen ski lift has a T-bar lift, a small rope tow or pony lift, a sledging run, and a winter hiking trail. The T-bar and small rope tow or pony lift are different types of lift; sledging and winter hiking add two more kinds of activity. When planning winter activities, you can choose between the lifts, sledging run, and winter hiking trail.
