Fieschertal between the valley and the high mountains

Fieschertal is a village and a municipality in the Goms district of the canton of Valais. The village lies in the valley of the Wysswasser. The river flows from the Fiescher Glacier and eventually joins the Rhône. The municipality encompasses high mountains and large glaciers, including part of the Aletsch Glacier and the entire Fiescher Glacier. The Jungfrau, Mönch, Fiescherhorn, Finsteraarhorn and Aletschhorn are associated with the area or lie along its edges; Lake Märjelen is also part of it. The valley, river and high mountains offer different perspectives on the landscape, which you can take into account when planning your trip.

Trails, the river and a suspension bridge

The Wysswasser Trail leads from Fiesch through lush natural surroundings into Fieschertal. Along the Wysswasser, there are secluded spots where you can linger. Another possible outing takes you to the Aspi-Titter suspension bridge, which connects the municipalities of Bellwald and Fieschertal. From Fieschertal, the walk to the bridge takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. In winter, the bridge is closed seasonally; check the conditions before your visit. The stated walking time refers to the walk from Fieschertal to the bridge.

The history of the village also spans different periods: Fieschertal was first mentioned in 1351 under the name “vallis de Viesthen,” meaning “Valley of Vies.” The construction of the road in 1964 and 1965 made Fieschertal accessible by road. The early written reference and the later development of road access are two distinct milestones in the village’s history.

Walks, mountain tours and winter routes

The large municipal area offers both leisurely walks and adventurous mountain tours. Individual trails may be subject to seasonal safety restrictions; conditions and route safety in the mountains vary by season. The Fieschertal/Fiesch area has 12 kilometres of winter hiking trails. You will also find marked snowshoe trails in the same area. Access may be affected by snow and safety conditions; snowshoe trails are also subject to seasonal and weather conditions. Check the conditions before setting out on a specific tour, before committing to a route.

Snow, cycling and air sports

The Blätz ski lift in Fieschertal is particularly suitable for children learning to ski. Operating hours may vary by season; check whether it is operating before your trip. You can also go sledging in Fieschertal, and Ghosky sledges are available for hire. Check availability in winter locally. Bike tours are offered in the Fieschertal/Fiesch area; route conditions and permitted use may change seasonally. Fieschertal/Fiesch is considered one of Switzerland’s best-known centres for hang gliding and paragliding. Flights depend on the weather and the conditions set by local operators. These activities involve different planning considerations: the season, weather and local guidance all play a role, depending on what you plan to do.

Dinosaurs and climbing

The SaurierTrail Fieschertal takes you into the world of dinosaurs on a journey through millions of years of prehistory. Alongside the trails through nature, it brings a subject focused on the past to the fore. Fieschertal also has a climbing garden. Before climbing, check the latest local safety information. Walks, mountain tours and climbing offer different ways to spend your time here; include the seasonal conditions of individual trails in your planning.
