Vernamiège is a locality in the municipality of Mont-Noble, in the Hérens District of the canton of Valais. Mont-Noble lies at the entrance to the Val d’Hérens. If you are looking for a hotel in Vernamiège, the hiking trails described here and the village church can serve as two specific points of reference when planning your trip: the trails differ in their destinations and landscapes, while the church offers a historical and architectural point of interest in the village.

Hiking trails with different destinations

The Chemin d'Ossona begins below the village of Vernamiège. It leads through forests and meadows, past La Marguéronne and Grand Sevanne, to the agrotourism hamlet of Ossona and its suspension bridge. The Erbioz trail takes a different route: it connects Longeborgne with Nax and passes through Erbioz and Vernamiège. While the hamlet of Ossona and the suspension bridge mark the destination of the Chemin d'Ossona, Vernamiège is part of the route connecting Longeborgne and Nax on the Erbioz trail. The trail highlights the historic wine-growing area and Vernamiège’s rural houses as part of the region’s remarkable cultural heritage.

A third route description is for the Nax–Saint-Martin–Eison nature trail. It is 15 km long, accessible from Vernamiège, and leads through forests and flowering meadows, along three successive bisses, across fast-flowing streams, and past distinctive high-mountain huts. Vernamiège’s wetlands are also covered in the trail’s interpretive guide. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Village church and building history

Vernamiège represents an agricultural and architectural culture whose roots go back to ancient times. A specific point of reference is the parish church: it stands in the center of the village and was built in the Neo-Baroque style. The church was built on the site of the former Saint-Antoine chapel after the Nax parish was struck by a disaster in 1909; it was consecrated in 1913.

The parish church is on the main road. If you drive through the village from the direction of Sion, it is on the left. The church is about a 20–25-minute drive from Sion. Its central location, architecture, and dated construction history offer a distinct cultural point of reference alongside the trails.

Getting there and spending time outdoors

For travel by public transport, you can go via Sion: from Geneva or Brig, take the Simplon line to Sion railway station, then transfer to a PostBus service to Vernamiège. Sion is the transfer point on this route. Check current connections before you travel.

A description from 2019 mentions several benches by Lac de Vernamiège, as well as two picnic tables and two fire pits above the lake. Further fire pits are located on the slopes of the small valley leading to the lake. As facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit.
