Termen is in the Brig district, in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The political municipality and Burgergemeinde (civic community) covers 1,878 hectares and stretches from the banks of the RhĂ´ne to the mountains above Rosswald. Mineral springs are also located within the municipality. In the 13th century, Termen separated from the original municipality of Naters.

Getting here and starting points

Termen can be reached via the N9 and is well served by public transport. From Termen, Brig-Glis town centre and Brig main station are an eight-minute drive away; actual travel time may vary depending on driving conditions. The starting point for the Termen Mountain Farming Experience Trail is at Sennereiplatz. From Brig, you can reach it by PostBus or via an approximately one-hour hike through Biela. If you take the bus to get there, check the timetable.

Hikes with different highlights

The Termen–Gmeini Egga–Termen circular hike starts at the village square. It follows the mountain trail, then an old irrigation channel through the forest to Gmeini Egga, and passes the chapel at Burgspitz. The circular route then leads back to Termen. Trail conditions may depend on the weather; check conditions before setting off.

You can begin the Termen–Mattalpji–Rosswald hike at Termen village square after taking the PostBus from Brig. After about an hour, the route reaches Termen’s old slate mountain. Mattalpji was formerly a pasture used as a pre-alpine grazing area and has been unused for several years. Fountains and old water pipes that supplied the alp with water from the Tunetschgraben are still visible. The descent from Rosswald to Rosswalder Alp follows old military roads. The two hikes therefore differ in their landmarks: one passes an irrigation channel and a chapel, while the other reveals traces of former alpine farming and water use.

Experience trails and mountain farming

The SmarTrail Brigerbärg starts at Termen village square and is designed for families, school classes, hikers and tourists. It combines history, culture and nature with interesting information and fun.

The Termen Mountain Farming Experience Trail is an approximately one-hour circular walk offering insights into mountain farming in Upper Valais. Its 33 panels with pictures and text explain the distinctive features of mountain farming in Valais. Its starting point at Sennereiplatz is different from the village square, where the SmarTrail begins.

Rosswald in winter

Rosswald and the Rosswald ski area are part of the municipality of Termen. The ski area has four ski lifts at 2,600 metres and 25 kilometres of well-groomed pistes. You can check the latest operating information when planning your visit, as the facilities may change over time. Another seasonal option is the thrilling sled ride, which starts in Rosswald and heads towards Riedalpji. Whether it is open depends on current piste conditions.
