Rosswald: Slopes, Toboggan Runs and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Rosswald
Rosswald is a village in the municipality of Termen, in the district of Brig in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. The village is located on a high plateau at around 1,800 metres, north of the Monte Leone massif on the edge of the Simplon region. Rosswald is a car-free area with numerous chalets and a modern ski area. Winter tourism is particularly important here, but there are also circular trails across the alp, a snowshoe trail and a cycling route.
Location and History
Historically, Rosswald’s meadows and alpine farming were used for agricultural purposes. The steep slopes towards the Ganter Valley and Ried-Brig were used for forestry.
Development of the ski area began in the mid-20th century. The cable car was built and the first slopes were prepared in 1953. Today, Rosswald is geared primarily towards winter tourism; the ski area has been expanded to an altitude of 2,600 metres.
Skiing and Tobogganing
The ski area has 25 kilometres of slopes rated blue, red and black. It includes four ski lifts at an altitude of 2,600 metres. A kids’ park with a magic carpet is located directly at the mountain station. Slope information and lift infrastructure may change as the area is updated, so check the latest information before your trip.
The two toboggan runs have different starting points: one starts right by the cable car and heads towards Resti; the other requires a ten-minute climb before you can set off. After a few bends, the runs meet and descend to the valley station in Ried-Brig. Operation depends on conditions.
Hiking and Snowshoe Trails
The Bergwasser circular trail is 4.70 kilometres long, takes 1.5 hours and is rated moderate. Rosswald has three circular trails across the alp.
The descent on the Rosswald–Fleschboden snowshoe trail is very sunny and, when visibility is good, offers views into the Rhone Valley as far as Central Valais. With suitable equipment, the trail is considered easy to walk and suitable for beginners; suitability depends on conditions. Views of the Rhone Valley and Central Valais are also weather-dependent.
Culture and Other Activities
St. Anna Chapel has a Gothic altar featuring a relief of Saint Michael and painted wings. A cycling tour in Rosswald starts at the mountain station, goes via Resti and returns to the valley station.
Getting There by Season
In summer, Rosswald can be reached by cable car or road. In winter, access is only by cable car from the valley station in Ried-Brig, which is at around 1,030 metres. You can reach the valley station by car or by PostBus from Brig. If travelling by public transport, check the timetables before setting out.
Parking in Ried-Brig is free. As parking conditions may change, check the latest information before you travel.
