Bombinasco: Local History and Mining Trail
Accommodation in Bombinasco
Bombinasco combines a medieval town center with the Oratorio della Santissima Trinità and the Sentiero del Parco Minerario del Malcantone.
Location and settlement pattern
At about 588 m above sea level, Bombinasco lies below Monte Lema on the southeastern slope of Motto Croce. The settlement is an exclave of the former municipality of Curio and lies northwest of Curio. Today, its center retains a medieval layout.
Oratory and historical traces
The Oratorio della Santissima Trinità in Bombinasco was built in 1670. It has a Baroque main altar made of stucco, with a scagliola antependium, a work by Giuseppe Maria Pancaldi of Ascona. A fresco on the right-hand wall of the choir is dated 1810. The year the building was constructed and the date of the fresco mark different points in the history of the oratory; the Baroque altar adds further art-historical detail.
The origins of the Bombinasco settlement are dated to pre-Roman times. At Froda, two cremation burials were dated to the 2nd century AD based on their soapstone urns. The settlement’s origins and an archaeological find at Froda thus represent distinct historical points of reference.
The Sentiero del Parco Minerario
Bombinasco is the seventh point on the Sentiero del Parco Minerario del Malcantone. The trail was created to rediscover part of the area’s mining history. Along the Sentiero, evidence indicates that the Celts who lived there began exploiting underground mineral resources in the hills of Malcantone at least 2,000 years ago. The trail thus connects a named location in Bombinasco with a long-standing historical theme of the region. Check the trail details before planning a hike.
The Aurifodina south of Bombinasco lies on a narrow, steep, wooded ridge between the stream gullies of Froda to the west and Val Grande, also known as Valle del Mulino, to the east. This landform provides the geographical context for the Aurifodina and gives the mining theme a specific setting. According to an archaeological study, the spoil heaps cover about 5,000 square meters: six lie west of the path and are clearly visible, while a smaller one lies on the other side and is less visible. Visibility may have changed since the study.
Hiking trails and the Laghetto in neighboring Astano
The Bombinasco exclave borders Astano. Numerous hiking trails through Malcantone start there; there is also a small lake, the Laghetto, where swimming and fishing are possible. The neighboring village thus offers activities that differ from Bombinasco’s settlement and mining history.
This gives you different options for planning your trip: the Sentiero explores the area’s mining history, while Astano offers hiking trails and activities at the Laghetto. Which of these aspects interests you most can help you decide how to include Bombinasco in your trip through Malcantone.
