In Agra, historic buildings and ecclesiastical art meet routes and leisure activities in the municipality. This offers a range of options for planning your trip, including local history, architecture, and routes whose distances and elevation gains are specified.

Church, Village History, and Sanatorium

Agra is mentioned in documents dating from 1335 as part of the historic Concilium de Agra et Premona. The Chiesa di San Tommaso has been documented since at least 1298 and stands at the foot of Monte Croce, on elevated ground above Agra. Its present form dates from the late 18th century. The choirs are decorated with illusionistic frescoes from 1770 to 1780; the church was restored between 1968 and 1980. The Agra, Paese bus stop serves visitors to the church.

The former sanatorium is also part of the area's history: the building was designed by Zurich architect Edwin Wipf, with support from engineer Robert Maillart. Hermann Hesse was among its well-known visitors. The sanatorium was associated with Agra's climatic potential; the village panorama encompassed the Gulf of Agno, Malcantone, and peaks as far away as Monte Rosa. The facility closed permanently in 1969 and was demolished in 2009 to make way for today's Collina d'Oro Resort.

Historic Houses and Rural Architecture

Palazzo Poncini was built in 1845 as the residence of the Poncini family, on an extensive property with a large garden. In the first half of the 20th century, the building was converted into a hotel for relatives of patients at the nearby German sanatorium. The 2024 municipal cultural heritage entry records that the palazzo was fully renovated in 2023 and converted into a condominium complex.

The 2024 municipal cultural heritage description dates Casa Adamini to the 18th century and attributes it to an anonymous author. Its façade is considered atypical for Collina d'Oro; the arches are more characteristic of tobacco-drying architecture in the Mendrisiotto. Casa Adamini in Bigogno di Agra has housed the Grotto Flora since 1920. It should not be confused with Casa Corte Adamini: its well-preserved exterior façade is in keeping with the local architectural setting, and wooden loggias provide access to the floors inside.

According to the 2024 municipal cultural heritage entry, Roccolo Adamini is a typical example of a building from the farming tradition. It is located in the Vallone woods, along public footpaths and within the recreational area below the former sanatorium. It has a rectangular floor plan, with two larger openings on each floor. Trees arranged in a semicircle have been preserved, making its historic integration into the landscape clearly visible.

Cemetery and Views of Carona

The cemetery is immediately beside the Chiesa di San Tommaso. The 2024 municipal cultural heritage description presents it as a publicly accessible open space with unobstructed views of the hills of Carona. The cemetery contains the chapel of the Bottani family, designed by Luigi Vassalli. The Adamini family tomb bears the signature of Andreoletti of Porto Ceresio. The church, cemetery, and two family memorials thus offer different architectural points of interest in one clearly identified location.

Routes and Getting Around

Collina d'Oro has a well-maintained network of paths stretching approximately 30 kilometres. It includes routes between Carabietta, Agra, Gentilino, and Montagnola; most run outside built-up areas. One route can be described more precisely: the Vita-Parcours in Bigogno/Posmonte is 3.6 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 120 metres. This gives you a choice between a route with specified measurements and a larger network connecting several places when planning your trip.

There is a PubliBike station at the Bigogno-Agra leisure facility. It is another specific point of reference, in addition to the paths and the bus stop used for visits to the church.

Wine Tasting in Agra

Gold Wine Tasting is a bookable wine tasting held at the Roccolo of the Collina d'Oro Resort in Agra. It is attended by an oenologist from Fattoria Moncucchetto and the resort's sommelier. The tasting introduces grape varieties from the vineyard where Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot are produced. The offering includes three wines—a white, a red, and a sparkling wine—along with a generous selection of typical Ticino cured meats and cheeses. Availability, booking conditions, and offering details may change; check these before booking.
