Vira lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Maggiore and is part of the municipality of Gambarogno. Closely packed houses, narrow lanes and arcades shape the old town centre. Churches, frescoes and trails with different focuses bring together architectural heritage and landscape here.

Landscape between the lake and mountains

Vira’s landscape stretches from the lakeshore over hills to the mountains. Chestnut forests first characterise the area, followed higher up by impressive beech forests. This variety gives the village a connection to different elevations: the landscape includes the lakeshore as well as wooded areas at higher altitudes.

Architectural heritage in the town centre

The parish church of SS. Pietro e Paolo and its churchyard, the Oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena and the old Franciscan monastery are protected as cultural heritage sites of local importance. Other protected sites include a late medieval house with a fresco of the Madonna and Child between two saints, facade frescoes on buildings in the town centre and a 17th-century bourgeois house.

The bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is protected as a natural monument of national importance. Vira’s stone railway bridge, built in 1948, is also among the town’s protected cultural heritage sites. The historic IVS route TI179.0.1 is likewise designated in Vira as protected cultural heritage of regional importance. The Church of San Pietro in Vira overlooks Lake Maggiore.

Art is also part of the town’s lanes: Vira has a long tradition of artistic events in the town centre. Those interested in architecture and local history will therefore find this cultural connection to public space alongside the churches and protected houses.

Trails with different focuses

The “Tra Monti e Lago” educational trail runs through Vira between Fosano and Magadino. Around 40 themed panels cover historical, geographical and scientific topics, including traditional occupations, new settlements, nature parks and recreation areas. If you would like to learn about the surrounding area as you walk, the trail offers a broad range of topics.

A panoramic route leads from Alpe di Neggia via Poncino della Croce to Vira Gambarogno. It is 11.4 kilometres long, runs mostly along paths and descends through the forest to the lower part of Vira by the lake. Its length and route provide practical guidance when choosing a walk for your plans.

Alpe di Neggia is accessible from Vira by bus; from the lower part of the village, you can travel by bus, train or boat. For the specific journey, it is worth checking the timetable.

Lido and Ticino specialities

Vira has a public lido on the lake. Stand-up paddleboarding is available at Shaka Beach; this activity may be seasonal. There is also a vending machine there offering exclusively Ticino products, with particular emphasis on produce from the Gambarogno region.

There is also a special place for tastings: Ristorante Rodolfo in Vira can host tastings in its historic wine cellar, which dates back to the 17th century. Bar Tennis Vira makes its own ice cream and cream ice cream, as well as lactose-free fruit sorbets, using only natural, high-quality products.
