Gresso: Terraces, Village Centre and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Gresso
Gresso is a locality in the municipality of Onsernone in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Until 9 April 2016, Gresso was an independent political municipality. The village lies at an elevation of about 999 metres above sea level on the southwestern foothills of Pizzo Peloso in the Valle di Vergeletto, a northern side valley of the Onsernone Valley. Those looking for hotels for a stay in Gresso can get a sense of the place from its landscape and the hiking routes that start there. Extensive man-made terraces lie above and below the built-up areas.
The locality comprises the village of Gresso and the western exclave of Alla Ca’; it also includes the Maiensäss of Mónt, at 1,340 to 1,410 metres above sea level.
Historic Village Centre
In the main village centre, houses dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries shape the streetscape; their long balconies face down the valley. The paved main path runs parallel to the contour lines. These features show the different orientations in the village centre: the balconies face down the valley, while the path follows the slope. The chapel dedicated to Saint Ursula dominates the small main square. It dates from 1703 and was restored towards the end of the 20th century. Two fountains dating from the mid-19th century help shape the small squares. Old pieces of workmanship on some façades recall Gresso’s once-important straw craft.
Gresso was first mentioned in 1266 under the name Agressio; in 1898, graves containing pottery and coins from Roman times were found there. These two dates point to different chapters in the village’s history: its early mention by name and archaeological finds from Roman times.
Hikes from Gresso
The routes described follow different courses. The circular hike Gresso–Alpe di Biètri–Alpe Bassa–Gresso returns to its starting point. The Gresso–Passo della Bassa–Gresso hike also returns to Gresso and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes; the time may vary depending on trail conditions and pace. It follows a marked mountain trail. The ascent leads along a wooded ridge to the buildings at Alpe Bassa.
Another ridge hike starts in Gresso with a steep climb through the forest and leads via Passo della Bassa and Passo della Maggia to Berzona. The route from Gresso to Capanna Alpe da Canaa passes the ruins of Alpe Bassa. The route “Sur des chemins isolés dans la verte Valle di Vergeletto” starts in Gresso, ends in Russo and crosses the Ribo on an old single-arch stone bridge. Check trail conditions before setting out; the approximate duration of the loop to Passo della Bassa may also vary depending on conditions and pace.
Getting There and the View
Gresso can be reached by car or bus; if travelling by bus, you must change in Russo. Check public transport connections before your trip. From the arrival platform or the adjoining small square, the view opens southwards into the Valle di Vergeletto. A distant view of Gresso from the south is characteristic of the village. From the arrival area, you can see into the valley; from farther away, the view turns towards the village.
