Torre: History and Hiking in the Blenio Valley
Accommodation in Torre
Torre is a hamlet in the Swiss municipality of Blenio in the canton of Ticino, located in the Blenio district. The settlement lies at an elevation of 760 to 768 m above sea level, at the beginning of the upper Blenio Valley. Historic buildings and the Sentiero storico numero 4 give your trip planning two clear focal points: local history and hiking.
Oratories, Paintings, and Architectural History
The Oratorio di San Salvatore stands on Ingerio Hill, on the site of a former medieval castle. It was first mentioned in 1430 and has a rafter roof and a choir with a groin vault. The oratory contains 16th-century frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tarilli. This building thus brings together an early historical reference and specific features of architecture and painting.
The Oratorio di Ingerio dates from 1759 and is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Graces. The oratory also contains a restored 16th-century fresco of the Madonna Enthroned. If you would like to see the fresco in person, check its condition and access before visiting.
Other Historical Traces
The bell tower is a Romanesque structure from the 12th century, over 30 m high and built on five levels. Since 1931, it has been protected as a cultural property of cantonal importance. Its height and levels give the tower a distinctive architectural profile.
The present-day church was rebuilt in 1732 after its predecessor was destroyed by fire. Castel Curterio served to control and defend the transit route to the Lukmanier Pass. In 1951, the course of the walls of the former fortification was uncovered.
A political event is also associated with Torre: the Pact of Torre was signed here in February 1182. The inhabitants of Blenio, Leventina, and Riviera formed an alliance against Alcherio da Torre. This offers another perspective on the past beyond the buildings and fortification remains: the focus is on the groups involved and their alliance.
The Fabrique de Chocolat Cima was established in 1903 as the first industry in the Blenio Valley. This adds another aspect of the valley’s regional past to its religious and fortification history: its industrial history.
Hiking and Navigation
The Sentiero storico numero 4 runs from Acquarossa to Olivone and mostly follows the lower path along the left bank of the Brenno River. The route is 12.6 km long, is considered difficult, and takes 4 hours and 5 minutes. Villa Pagani is one of the sights along the Sentiero storico numero 4 in Torre.
Brown trail markers, along with orientation and information boards, help you navigate the route. Trail conditions can vary seasonally; check the current condition of the route and its signage before setting out.
A new footbridge over the Soia stream gorge between Torre and Dangio was inaugurated on December 22, 2025. If you would like to include the bridge in your plans, check its condition on site. The historic trail runs from Acquarossa to Olivone; the bridge provides a separate route connection between Torre and Dangio.
