Corzoneso lies in the central Blenio Valley, on the western side of the valley at the foot of the 2,417-metre-high Pizzo Erra. The village is part of the political municipality of Acquarossa in the Canton of Ticino; previously, it was an independent municipality. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1210 under the name Cursonexe. For your trip planning, the historic buildings and the various trails offer two distinct focal points: the churches provide insights into art from several centuries, while the routes explore themes such as photography, water and cycling.

Churches, Frescoes and Architectural History

The parish church of Santi Nazario e Celso, also called Santi Nazaro e Celso, is mentioned as early as 1211 and is a religious cultural monument protected by the Canton of Ticino. Its late Gothic frescoes from the second half of the 15th century are attributed to the Seregnesi workshop. The side chapel contains further frescoes, probably attributed to Giovanni Battista Tarilli and dated 1587. The church thus brings together an early historical reference and considerably later phases of fresco painting.

In Boscero, the church of San Remigio offers a different architectural focus. The Romanesque building, with two apses, dates from around the middle of the 11th century. It contains late Romanesque frescoes from the 13th century, as well as two stucco reliefs depicting apostles from the 11th or 12th century. The building’s form and artworks thus offer different chronological points of reference for a visit to this place.

The Oratorio di Santa Maria del Monastero was built in the 13th century and was formerly dedicated to Saint Martin. Its surviving frescoes date from the 16th to the 19th century. Nearby, you can see remnants of walls that probably belonged to a hospice of the Humiliati, founded before 1270. The hospice served as a resting point for travellers on the Via del Lucomagno.

Casa Rotonda in Casserio also offers a distinctive architectural point of interest: the three-storey building, with its circular floor plan, dates from the late 18th century and houses the Roberto Donetta photographic archive. Casa Rotonda is also a stop on the Sentiero storico n. 1 in the Blenio Valley. Here, a distinctive architectural form, a photographic archive and a historic trail come together in one place.

Trails with Different Themes

The photography trail Sulle tracce di Roberto Donetta reaches the centre of Corzoneso and then follows a mule track to Corzoneso Piano. A viewpoint along the route offers views of Corzoneso. The described route therefore continues from the village centre to Corzoneso Piano; when planning your walk, you should also take the conditions of each section into account.

The project Quatro pâss visín a r’aqua adds a themed trail focused on water. The accessible trail runs from Dongio via Corzoneso Piano and Acquarossa and back to Dongio. The route descriptions thus offer different points of focus: one is shaped by the water theme, while the other follows the sequence of places named. Trail conditions and maintenance can change, so check the latest conditions before setting out.

For cyclists, the BrĂĽsacĂĽ Bike Route runs from the Acquarossa-Comprovasco bus stop via Corzoneso to Monte Foppa. On the final section from Corzoneso to Acquarossa, there are several difficult passages where cyclists are asked to dismount briefly and continue on foot. Seasonal conditions may affect whether the route is rideable. Check these conditions especially for the section you plan to ride.

Mill and Living Traditions

The Corzoneso mill was in operation until the early 20th century and was used mainly for grinding rye and wheat. If booked in advance by email or telephone, visitors can see the mill in operation. It can also be used during the traditional Corzoneso Mill Festival; check the dates and access arrangements separately.

Traditional games and customs are also central to the leisure activities organised by the Ratín dru Murín group. It offers these activities to children throughout the year. Corzoneso’s cultural attractions thus range from historic buildings and frescoes to customs incorporated into leisure activities.
