Discover Dozwil: Village History, Trails and a Meeting Place
Accommodation in Dozwil
Dozwil is located in Oberthurgau on the Seerücken. Trails and viewpoints, community life and local history offer various ways to plan your stay. Depending on whether you are interested in getting active, local activities or historical details, different aspects of the village come to the fore.
Location and Getting There
Amriswil is approximately 3 km south of Dozwil, and Romanshorn approximately 4 km to the east. Dozwil is connected to Amriswil by PostBus route 944. Check the current departure times before travelling so you can plan your journey accordingly.
Hiking Routes and Views
Six hiking routes start at Dozwil, Pärkli, railway station and end there again. As the range of routes may change, check the current route information before setting out. This lets you plan your hike around the available circular routes without having to arrange different start and finish points.
The Güttingerwald forest west of Dozwil and the Romanshornerwald forest east of the village are designated local recreation areas. There are also viewpoints on the edge of Dozwil from which, in favourable weather, you can see across the entire Lake Constance. Weather conditions therefore determine whether you can enjoy the view over the lake; the two forests and the viewpoints are separate landmarks in the area.
Village Life and Activities
The Dozwil meeting place was created gradually over about four years on a former agricultural meadow. It is intended as a place to relax, unwind and meet others. This describes its intended role in village life; there are also activities with their own formats and conditions.
At Familienplausch Dozwil, children up to and including sixth grade can play football and floorball or take part in castle battles when accompanied by an adult. Members and other interested people are also welcome. On several Sundays from December to March, the gym is transformed into an activity area with a variety of equipment for Familienplausch. The programme is seasonal and dates may change, so check the latest dates in advance.
A street workout area with pull-up bars, dip bars, horizontal bars and other training equipment is located in the secondary school playground. Its facilities differ from the seasonal activities at Familienplausch. The cemetery chapel can be requested for weddings through the Dozwil municipal administration; confirm the specific arrangements with them.
Community events are also part of village life: the Advent window event was organised for the sixth time in 2024, when 24 windows in the village were to be unveiled. The programme for the 2023 Dozwil autumn hike included an hour-long walk in the forest amid autumn colours, followed by the option of having pumpkin soup at the Landhaus restaurant. These examples refer to events at the time and are not a current schedule.
Local History and the Cemetery Chapel
Dozwil was first mentioned in 1385 under the name Dotzwile. From 1820 to 1870, hand weaving contributed to the village’s prosperity. These two dates provide a brief historical context: the first mention came well before the later period when this craft gained importance in Dozwil.
The cemetery chapel can also be placed in context using specific dates. The municipal assembly approved its construction in 1926. The chancel wall painting “The Ascension of Christ” was created in 1935 by Uttwil artist E. E. Schlatter; in 2006, the painting was restored to its original state. The bell bears an inscription commemorating its donation by Colonel F. Habisreutinger and Director J. Bär in 1927. You can enquire about using the chapel for a wedding through the municipal administration.
A cosy inn in Dozwil has more than 100 seats in several rooms. If you are planning to dine there, ask about current options in advance. This way, you can take local details—from hiking routes and views to village history and the meeting place—into account when choosing your stay.
