Amriswil is an urbanised industrial village in the Oberthurgau region. When planning your stay, you can choose between local history, views, nature and active experiences. The local history museum explores Amriswil’s past, while the Gewerbeturm tower offers views across the town as far as Lake Constance. The Hudelmoos nature reserve and activities such as the Krimi-Spass crime trail offer different experiences, too. If you are looking for a hotel in Amriswil, it helps to first consider which of the town’s aspects you are most interested in during your stay.

Getting here and finding your way around

Amriswil’s centre has an Intercity railway station with connections towards Zurich and St. Gallen. As transport services and timetables may change, check the latest connections when planning your journey. Amriswil is also at the junction of the Winterthur–Arbon and Konstanz–St. Gallen roads. The Winterthur–Romanshorn railway line also serves the town. When planning your journey, you can take into account both the central Intercity station and the road and rail connections mentioned above.

Local history and school museum

The Amriswil local history museum presents the town’s history. It is open on the first Sunday afternoon of each month from 2 to 5 pm. Opening hours may change, so check the latest information before your visit. Another place of historical interest is the Thurgau School Museum in the Mühlebach schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was built in 1845/46 using a technique known as Piseebau, with unfired clay. The school museum includes a historic classroom from around 1920. A visit therefore focuses both on the schoolhouse’s architectural history and on a later glimpse into the history of education.

The Amriswil Academy is also associated with cultural activities in Amriswil. It was founded in 1937 by the writer Dino Larese. Together with the local history museum and the school museum, it offers a cultural perspective on a range of subjects: the town’s history, education and activities associated with the academy.

Views and nature

The 19-metre-high Amriswil Gewerbeturm tower offers views across Amriswil and the surrounding area as far as Lake Constance. The tower can be reached on foot via a short walk from several directions. The tower’s height and views make it a clear destination; you can plan the short walk as a separate activity without having to start from any particular direction.

The Hudelmoos nature reserve extends across the municipalities of Amriswil, Zihlschlacht and Muolen (SG). It is considered one of Switzerland’s most significant raised bogs and is now a biodiversity hotspot. Birds, butterflies and dragonflies find a habitat there. You can explore the raised bog on foot. This makes Hudelmoos a different kind of nature experience from the views at the Gewerbeturm: here, the focus is on the moorland and its wildlife.

Active experiences in Amriswil

The interactive Krimi-Spass crime trail takes you around Amriswil via eleven information signs. The trail is just under 3 km long and takes about two hours. Its manageable length and approximate duration make it easy to plan as a separate activity during your stay. If you would rather plan water-based activities, Amriswil swimming pool has an interactive paddling pool, water slides, a current channel, beach volleyball courts and a 50-metre swimming pool. The swimming pool operates seasonally, so check its opening times for your planned visit.

The pump track at the Tellenfeld sports complex is open to the public. It has a large and a small course for different skill levels. The crime trail, swimming pool and pump track therefore offer different ways to spend time in Amriswil: walking around town, enjoying water activities or riding a course designed for different skill levels. You can choose the option that suits your stay based on your own interests.
