Rorschach: Lakeside, culture and active days
Accommodation in Rorschach
Discover Rorschach from its lakeshore, its diverse architectural history and its hiking and cycling routes. From the lakeside promenade, the view stretches from the hills of Appenzell to another Alpine panorama; from the wide bay, you can look across Lake Constance to the German shores near Lindau and Friedrichshafen. Whether you want to focus on museums, swimming or a longer leg of a journey, the area’s many different facets offer a practical starting point for planning your trip.
Lakeshore, harbour and routes
The Way of St. James reaches Rorschach via the MartinsbrĂĽcke and passes the harbour and lakeside promenade. The area between the harbour, railway station and old town is also easy to explore on foot. For a day by the water, the Rorschach lido is another option: it is close to the train, bus and harbour, and there are plenty of parking spaces in front of the lido. Check availability before travelling.
The routes vary considerably in length and time required. The Via Jacobi hiking stage from Rorschach to Herisau starts on the lakeshore and covers 26 kilometres with 800 metres of ascent. The stated duration is 6 hours and 50 minutes—a considerable amount of time to allow for in your day’s plans. Check the provider’s latest route conditions before setting off.
Cyclists can also choose from several routes: the Lake Constance Cycle Path stage from Lindau to Rorschach is 42 kilometres long and rated moderate. The final stage of the Herzroute runs from Altstätten SG via Walzenhausen and Rheineck to Lake Constance at Rorschach. It is listed as 53 kilometres long with 1,050 metres of elevation gain and is rated difficult. For both tours, it is worth checking the latest route information before you set off.
Townscape and architectural history
The townscape features Baroque townhouses, elegant historic villas, an industrial outlying district with a former workers’ settlement, and the Mariaberg monastery complex. Almost the entire municipal area is listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance as a site of national importance. Other notable historic features in Rorschach include a Gothic cloister and a former chapter house. These architectural features add their own accents alongside the townhouses and villas. Rorschach was granted market rights in 947.
According to the planning status as of 25 June 2026, the Badhütte is to be faithfully reconstructed so that it can be preserved as a protected historic monument. The historic concrete structure is intended to retain its original form and character while meeting today’s requirements for structural integrity, durability and water protection.
Museums and experiences
At the Museum im Kornhaus, more than 50 interactive learning stations invite visitors to explore optical illusions, mathematical magic, and writing and communication. Other exhibits cover life on Lake Constance and topics such as population, industry, trades and commerce in Rorschach—all to touch and try out. The museum thus brings together scientific and cultural topics, without requiring you to focus on just one type of exhibition.
The Forum WĂĽrth Rorschach is the museum space at WĂĽrth Haus Rorschach. It draws on the internationally oriented WĂĽrth Collection, which comprises more than 20,000 works, and hosts changing art exhibitions across approximately 800 square metres. If you would rather tie your visit to a specific event, Jazz Night Rorschach offers a flexible format: the bands stay at their respective venues, while audiences can move between venues or remain in one place. Check event dates when planning your visit.
Swimming and family activities
The Rorschach lido has two swimming pools, a paddling pool and a 65-metre waterslide. Facilities also include diving boards at heights of 1, 3 and 5 metres, a beach volleyball court, a children’s playground, a football pitch, and other play and sports areas. Since facilities may change during future renovations, it is worth checking the current amenities before your visit. The lido also has a restaurant with a garden terrace and an adjoining hostel, as well as a kiosk selling snacks, ice cream and drinks; the food selection may vary seasonally.
Fägnäscht is considered the largest indoor playground in Eastern Switzerland and is suitable for children aged one to twelve and their parents. On approximately 2,000 square metres, it offers a climbing maze, trampolines, a mini football pitch, electric cars, ball cannons and a large slide, among other attractions. For toddlers, the Chäferfest is a dedicated play area with an obstacle course, large Lego blocks and various wall games.
