Schönenwerd lies on the Aare between Olten and Aarau, in the Swiss Plateau at the foot of the Jura Mountains. The town belongs to the Olten district and lies 386 metres above sea level. Its history combines religious architecture with the industry of the Bally shoe factories, which shaped the townscape and community life from the mid-19th century until the 1990s. They helped Schönenwerd develop from a farming village into an industrial village with extensive workers’ housing estates. This gives you a range of options for your stay: parkland, industrial history, museums and church architecture, as well as a seasonal outdoor swimming pool.

Bally Park and industrial history

You can explore Bally Park both as a landscaped garden and in the context of the town’s history. It was first established in 1868 as a recreational area for Bally’s workforce and the public. Between 1888 and 1890, the park was redesigned: a branch of the river was converted into a system of ponds, the grounds were carefully planted and various park structures were added. The two phases of development give the park a distinctive historical dimension. It is open to the public around the clock.

The Ballyana exhibition also explores Schönenwerd’s industrial history. It is located in the shed hall of the former Bally Band and presents the subject through archives, machines and a shoe collection. This lets you discover the history of the shoe factories through a range of exhibits, rather than focusing solely on how the townscape developed.

Museums with distinctive collections

At the Paul Gugelmann Museum, you can see around 40 poetic machines and watch them demonstrated. The guided tour lasts just over an hour; no advance booking is required. This gives you a specific time frame to consider when planning a museum visit during your stay.

The Swiss Match Museum is devoted to 150 years of Swiss match history. Around 40 display cases on three exhibition levels offer a cross-section of the subject. The collection includes, among other things, lighters from before the advent of matches, accessories, collectors’ items, curiosities and pyrotechnics. In the basement, you can also see a match-making machine from 1930. The exhibition thus brings together everyday history and technical objects in a single collection.

Church architecture and historic buildings

The Collegiate Church of St. Leodegar was built in the mid-11th century as an early Romanesque basilica. Its interior is now decorated in the Rococo style. Romanesque forms are still visible beneath this decoration; six pairs of arcades connect the three naves. It is this combination of different stylistic elements that makes the church interior architecturally interesting.

The Schlössli is a different type of building: a garden pavilion in the English Gothic style. It was built in 1864/65 and declared a monument of national importance in 1994. Important for planning your visit: for safety reasons, the Schlössli is not open to the public. The church and pavilion therefore represent different aspects of architectural history, as well as different visitor options.

The Aare and the seasonal outdoor swimming pool

Schönenwerd’s outdoor swimming pool on the Aare offers several ways to swim and bathe, including swimming in the Aare, a water slide, a diving tower, a non-swimmer pool, a children’s paddling pool and a 50-metre swimming pool. It operates seasonally. So if you are planning a day at the pool, bear in mind that it is seasonal and check transport conditions before setting off.

You can reach the outdoor pool by public transport on bus route 3 Aarau–Gretzenbach; the stop is a three-minute walk away. Schönenwerd railway station is a ten-minute walk away. This information can help you plan your journey to the pool without conflating the town’s different visitor attractions.
