Gretzenbach is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Solothurn and belongs to the Olten district. There are several themes to choose from when planning your trip: Bally Park, with its combination of the Aare landscape and park design; Roman remains at the Roman Bath; and the parish church of St. Peter and Paul and Wat Srinagarindravararam. You can explore the municipality through its landscape, archaeological history or religious architecture and choose the highlights that suit your interests.

Bally Park and the Aare Landscape

Bally Park combines an Aare landscape with an English-style park and stilt houses. The natural setting includes ponds and canals, while pagodas and grottoes add a different design element. Water, greenery and architectural features offer several points of interest during a visit to the park. The park is open to the public around the clock, so you can plan your visit at a time that suits you. If you want to focus on a single landscape destination, the park is an alternative to a hike that connects several stops.

Landscape and Hiking Opportunities

In the wider area around Gretzenbach, the Aare has carved channels into a terrace; larger areas of forest and farmland are also part of the landscape. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and enjoying nature. One specific hiking option is the Aare River hike between Aarau and Olten. Its circular route passes through Schönenwerd, Bally Park, Gretzenbach, the Gösgen nuclear power plant and Niedergösgen, before returning to Schönenwerd. You can choose between focusing on the park and following a route that connects several named stops. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Church, Roman Bath and Local History

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was expanded in 1884 and is listed as a protected property in the cantonal heritage register. In 1912, a Roman house with an integrated bath was uncovered at the parish church in Gretzenbach; the historic site is now known as the “Roman Bath.” Some of the Roman structures were restored under the direction of the cantonal archaeologist. The church and the Roman Bath thus represent different historical chapters: a church expansion in the 19th century and a Roman residential complex uncovered in 1912.

Gretzenbach is first documented in a text dated March 15, 778, which survives only in a copy from the 10th century. The date of the text and the later copy are two different points in time. This distinction gives the early written record a clear historical context without equating it with the age of the surviving copy.

Thai Temple Architecture

Wat Srinagarindravararam serves as a study and meditation center and is open to everyone interested. Its ubosot was designed in the traditional Thai style; the tower gilded with gold leaf is called a mondop. Murals by well-known Thai artists decorate the temple area. The focus is therefore on temple architecture and artistic decoration. Compared with the history of the parish church and the Roman Bath, the wat offers a distinct cultural perspective. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can take these differences into account when choosing places to visit.

Local Layout and Getting There

Present-day Gretzenbach includes old Gretzenbach near the Catholic church and the Weid district in the rear part of the linear village. Buses connect Gretzenbach with Schönenwerd and Aarau every 15 minutes. Check the timetable for your travel date if you plan to use one of these connections to get there.
