When looking for a hotel in Egerkingen, it can help to plan around the focus of your outing. Egerkingen lies in the Gäu district at 434 metres above sea level. The local recreation area includes the landscape along the Dünnern and the heights of the Jura. Excursions range from nature trails in and above the village to a literary trail and historic landmarks; the 3-Burgen-Wanderung Thal is a day hike into the Solothurn Jura. You can plan your day around whether you are more interested in the landscape, texts along a trail, or archaeological and architectural history.

Hiking Trails and Nature around Egerkingen

Several T1 hiking trails lead from Egerkingen to the summit ridge of Höchi Flue. Access and trail markings may change due to maintenance or seasonal conditions; check both before setting out. In fine weather and with clear visibility, the viewpoint at Höchi Flue offers a panorama stretching from the peaks of eastern Switzerland to the French Alps.

The Jakobsleiter-Rinderweg nature trail above Egerkingen features 20 themed stops. There is also a nature trail on the Vorberg, created by the Egerkingen Nature Conservation Association. The Solothurn Wild Plant Tour starts at Egerkingen railway station. It lists, among others, nettle, dandelion, devil’s-bit scabious and hedge woundwort as tasty ingredients for salads, soups, cream cheese, casseroles or vegetable dishes. Plant availability varies by season. If you plan to forage, follow local rules and make sure you can identify plants safely.

The attractions have different focuses for planning your day: Höchi Flue offers hiking trails to the summit ridge and a panorama that depends on fine weather and clear visibility; the Jakobsleiter-Rinderweg has 20 themed stops. With 14 stations and poems, the Poetry Trail adds a literary dimension.

The Poetry Trail and Local History

The Egerkingen Poetry Trail is titled “Life Is a Path” and leads to 14 stations, each with a poetic text. The poems are by author and theatre-maker Christoph Schwager, who grew up in Egerkingen. Unlike the nature trails, the focus here is on language and authorship: Schwager’s connection to the village links the literary trail with Egerkingen.

The village’s history also reaches back to prehistoric and Roman times. Archaeological evidence includes a Roman manor in Santel; the Catholic parish church of St. Martin stands on Roman walls. In the cantonal register dated 30 November 2018, the parish church at Domherrenstrasse 2 and the Old Mill at Bahnhofstrasse 24 are listed as protected sites. The manor in Santel and the walls beneath the church make the Roman period visible through two specific connections to Egerkingen; the prehistoric evidence broadens the historical picture.

Egerkingen is a transport hub on the A1 and A2 motorways and is connected by private transport to Basel, Zurich, Lucerne and Bern every half hour.
